So, I was just kicking back the other day, and out of nowhere, the 2015 New York Mets popped into my head. Yeah, that season. And specifically, I started thinking about their pitchers. Man, what a ride that year was, right?
My Little Memory Jogging Session
I figured, why not try and remember who was on that pitching staff? A little mental exercise, you know? My own little practice to see how much I could recall. It’s funny how some names just jump right out, and others, well, they take a bit more effort to dig up. I started just by trying to list them out in my head, almost like I was making a roster from scratch.
The first ones that hit me, of course, were those young flamethrowers. Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, and Noah Syndergaard. Those guys were the talk of the town. Then Steven Matz also came into the picture, adding to that young core. It felt like every night one of these guys was out there throwing gas.
But it wasn’t just the young guns. You gotta remember Bartolo Colon! Big Bart, just doing his thing, eating up innings and somehow always getting guys out. He was a legend. And then, at the back end of the bullpen, Jeurys Familia was just lights out as the closer. He was pretty automatic that year, it felt like.
My process was pretty simple:
- Start with the aces, the big names everyone remembers.
- Then think about the veteran presence, like Colon.
- Move on to the bullpen, especially the closer.
- Then I tried to recall some of the setup guys or other starters who filled in. That part gets a bit fuzzier without looking things up, but it’s part of the fun, trying to piece it all together.
I kept going through it, trying to visualize them on the mound. Harvey with that intensity, deGrom with that hair and the smooth delivery, Thor bringing the hammer. It was a really distinct group.
Connecting the Dots to That Season’s Success
And as I was going through this mental list, it just clicked again how crucial that pitching staff was to their success in 2015. They ended up winning the National League East, which was a pretty big deal, their first division title in a while if I remember correctly. They racked up, what, 90 wins in the regular season? You don’t do that by accident, and a huge chunk of that credit goes to the arms they had.
It was a good little exercise, just sitting there and trying to reconstruct that piece of Mets history from my own memory. That pitching staff was truly something else, and it’s cool to just take a moment and remember how dominant they were. They really carried the team that year and made it an unforgettable season for us fans.
