It all started with this thing called Sangun. Nobody really wanted to touch it, you know? It had a reputation.
When I first joined the team, they sort of just… waved a hand in its general direction. “Yeah, that Sangun thing? That’s your baby now,” one of the senior guys told me, not even making eye contact. Great start, right? This Sangun, it was supposed to be our main system for pulling all sorts of important reports. The keyword here is supposed to be.
So, I decided to roll up my sleeves and dive in. First order of business: find some documentation. Ha! That was a good one. The closest thing to “docs” I could find were a few ancient text files on a forgotten corner of the shared drive. Most of them were just rants from previous poor souls who’d wrestled with Sangun, complaining about how terrible it was. Super helpful.
I must have spent weeks, maybe even a couple of months, just trying to get a feel for how the darn thing actually worked. It felt more like an archaeological dig than software maintenance, uncovering layers upon layers of old, convoluted code, quick fixes piled on top of other quick fixes. Some bits were so tangled up, I swear, if you changed a single line of code, three other completely unrelated parts of Sangun would just keel over and die. No error messages, no warnings, just complete, utter silence. The panic in the office was something else. We ended up staying all night, fuelled by stale coffee, desperately trying to pull the numbers together manually straight from the database because Sangun had decided to throw a massive tantrum.
After that particular all-nighter, I sat down and had a long, hard think. We couldn’t keep going on like this, constantly babysitting Sangun. It was sucking up all our productive time, and for what? Reports that were usually late and, frankly, probably not even accurate half the time. So, I started poking around, looking into alternatives. Just quietly, you know, in my own spare time. I found some much simpler tools out there, some more modern ways of handling data and generating reports. I even managed to cobble together a small demo, just to show how we could get the exact same reports, but way faster and without all the Sangun-induced headaches.
Now, you might be thinking, “Okay, so how did this whole Sangun saga really shake out for you? And why are you even telling me all this?” Fair questions.
Well, you’d probably expect management to be over the moon with my little demo, right? “Wow, look at this guy! Taking initiative! Solving problems!” Yeah, not so much. They were completely, utterly stuck on Sangun. “But we’ve invested so much time and money into Sangun,” was the usual line. “It’s a bit complicated, sure, but it gets the job done… most of the time.” They just didn’t want to hear about anything new, anything different. It was like banging my head against a brick wall.
That whole mess with Sangun, and especially the stubborn refusal from the higher-ups to even consider a better, simpler way of doing things, that was a massive eye-opener for me. It wasn’t just about the crappy old system anymore; it was about the entire mindset of the place. I came to realize pretty quickly that I wasn’t going to be able to grow or make any real impact there. I was just burning all my energy fighting a losing battle against a broken system and an equally broken culture.
So, I started looking around for other opportunities. Quietly, of course. And you know what the funny thing is? All those painful hours I spent wrestling with Sangun, trying to understand its twisted guts, and then all the time I spent researching better alternatives? That experience actually taught me a heck of a lot. I learned a ton about what not to do when you’re building or maintaining a system. And I got pretty decent at digging into data and figuring out simpler ways to get things done. I ended up landing a new job a few months down the line. It was a place where they actually got excited about new ideas and improving things. They had their own old systems, sure – every company does. But the big difference was, they were actually willing to listen and were open to making things better.
It’s kind of amusing, really. I heard not too long ago that my old company is still struggling with good ol’ Sangun. Apparently, they even tried to throw more money at the problem by hiring a team of expensive consultants to “fix” it once and for all. I can only imagine how that’s going for them.
Sometimes, you just have to recognize when you’re fighting a battle you can’t win, especially with something like Sangun. And maybe, just maybe, the smarter move is to fight for a better environment for yourself instead. That was the biggest lesson I took away from the whole Sangun ordeal. It’s not always about the code or the system itself; a lot of the time, it’s about finding a place where you can actually make a difference and feel like your efforts are valued.
