Okay, so I got curious about Snapchat the other day. Like, really curious about what happens when you hit that block button. Specifically, I wanted to know – do the messages just disappear for everyone? I hear different things, so I figured, let’s just try it out and see.

Setting Up the Test
I decided the best way was a hands-on approach. I didn’t want to just read about it, I wanted to actually do it. So, I asked my friend, Alex, if they’d help me out with a quick experiment. We both use Snapchat regularly, so it was easy enough.
The Actual Process: Sending and Blocking
Here’s what we did, step-by-step:
- First, we opened up our chat on Snapchat.
- We sent a few messages back and forth. Just simple stuff like “Test message 1,” “Can you see this?”, “Yep, got it.” We wanted to make sure there were messages saved in the chat before the block. We both confirmed we could see these messages.
- Then, it was time for the block. I went to Alex’s profile from our chat.
- Tapped the three dots in the corner, went to ‘Manage Friendship’.
- And then I hit ‘Block’. Snapchat asks you to confirm, which I did.
Checking What Happened: My Side
Immediately after I blocked Alex, I went back to my main chat screen. I scrolled through the list. Guess what? The entire chat conversation with Alex was completely gone from my list. Vanished. It wasn’t archived or hidden somewhere else I could find; it was just gone from my view.
Checking What Happened: Alex’s Side
This was the important part. I texted Alex (outside of Snapchat, obviously) and asked them to check their Snapchat chat list.
Here’s what Alex reported back:

- Our chat thread was still visible on their chat screen.
- When they opened the chat, all the messages we had sent before I blocked them were still there. They could still read “Test message 1,” “Can you see this?”, “Yep, got it.”
- So, the messages did NOT delete on their end. They just couldn’t send me any new messages, and my name probably looked a bit different to them, but the history remained.
After Unblocking
Just to see what happens next, I unblocked Alex after a few minutes. I had to search for them and add them back or manage the block list.
Did our old chat history reappear on my phone? Nope. Still gone. When we started chatting again, it was like a brand new conversation thread for me. Any messages sent while blocked obviously didn’t go through either way.
So, What’s the Bottom Line?
From my own little test, it seems pretty clear. When you block someone on Snapchat:
- The messages and the entire chat history disappear from your Snapchat app. You won’t see it anymore unless you unblock them and start a new chat (the old stuff doesn’t come back for you).
- However, the person you blocked can still see all the messages that were sent and received before you blocked them. The messages are not deleted from their account.
So yeah, blocking cleans things up on your side, but it doesn’t erase the past conversation on the other person’s phone. Definitely something worth knowing!
