Okay, so, “December 22nd Incident” – sounds dramatic, right? It kinda was, in a nerdy, techy way. It all started with me wanting to, you know, streamline my home network. I’d been meaning to set up a proper media server for ages, and I finally had a free day.
I dusted off an old PC I had lying around. Figured it would be perfect – plenty of storage, decent enough specs. The first step was choosing an operating system. I went back and forth, reading tons of stuff online, before finally settling on a lightweight Linux distro. Seemed like the best fit for my needs.
Downloaded the ISO, burned it to a USB drive – so far, so good. Booted the old PC from the USB, and… nothing. Black screen. Tried again. Same thing. Okay, time for some troubleshooting.

- Tried a different USB port – nope.
- Re-downloaded the ISO, thinking maybe it was corrupted – still nothing.
I was starting to get frustrated. I spent a good hour just fiddling with the BIOS, trying different combinations of settings, hoping something would work. I even popped open the case to make sure everything was connected properly. No dice.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I stumbled upon a forum post online. Someone with a similar motherboard had the exact same problem. Turns out, there was a known issue with the BIOS version and that particular Linux distro. A BIOS update was needed.
Finding the right BIOS update was another adventure. The manufacturer’s website was a mess, but I eventually tracked it down. Flashed the BIOS (always a slightly nerve-wracking process), and… success! The PC booted from the USB drive, and I was finally able to install the operating system.
Setting up the media server software itself was relatively straightforward. I followed some online tutorials, tweaked a few settings, and transferred all my media files to the old PC. By the end of the day, I had a fully functioning media server, accessible from all my devices. Yay!
So, the “December 22nd Incident” wasn’t exactly a disaster, but it was definitely a reminder that even seemingly simple tech projects can turn into a whole-day affair. But hey, I learned a lot, and I now have a sweet home media setup. All’s well that ends well, I guess.
