What Percent of Golfers Break 90? Learn How You Compare to Others!

Okay, so I’ve been seeing this question pop up a lot lately: “What percent of golfers break 90?” And you know what? It got me thinking. I mean, I play golf, but I’m no pro. I wanted to see where I stood, and maybe help some other folks out in the process. So, I started digging.

What Percent of Golfers Break 90? Learn How You Compare to Others!

First things first, I went to the usual source everyone seems to go to when it comes to golf data which called “National Golf Foundation” and I found that it said only about 26% of golfers consistently shoot below 90. That’s not a lot, it’s like, only one in four!

I then began to really get into it. I tracked my scores for the past, uh, let’s say about ten rounds. Not exactly scientific, but hey, it’s a start. I grabbed my scorecard, and start counting. It’s not pretty, folks. Some good rounds, some… not so good.

  • Round 1: 95. Oof.
  • Round 2: 88. Alright, not bad!
  • Round 3: 102. Let’s not talk about it.
  • Round 4: 92. Getting closer.
  • Round 5: 90. Still not under 90.
  • Round 6: 89. Feel good about this round!
  • Round 7: 96. Well, at least it’s not over 100.
  • Round 8: 91. I don’t want to give up.
  • Round 9: 87. Almost there!
  • Round 10: 93. So close.

After gathering my own scores, I realized something. Breaking 90 isn’t just about hitting the ball well. It’s about the whole game. I mean, I can drive the ball pretty far, but my short game? Yikes. And putting? Don’t even get me started. So, what did I do? I started practicing like crazy. I hit the range, worked on my chipping, and spent hours on the putting green.

The 90-Percent Rule

I heard about something called the “90-percent rule” which is about hitting the ball at least 90% of the way to the target. So if you’re 100 yards out, you gotta get it at least 90 yards. Makes sense, right? This could be a game-changer for me. I also heard that only 2-5% of golfers break 80. It’s super difficult! But it’s possible. As someone who’s now consistently breaking 90, I’m starting to set my sights on that 80. It’s a long shot, but hey, why not dream big?

My scores started improving. Not every round was under 90, but I was getting closer. And more importantly, I was having fun. I mean, that’s why we play golf, right? So, what’s the takeaway here? Breaking 90 is tough. But it’s doable. You gotta put in the work, focus on your weaknesses, and most importantly, enjoy the game. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll be in that 2-5% breaking 80. A guy can dream, right?
