So, I’ve been getting into soccer lately, or as some folks call it, football. It’s a whole new world for me, and honestly, I was pretty clueless at first. I mean, what does ‘soccer’ even mean? I decided to dig in and figure it out.
First, I watched a bunch of games. I tried to follow along, but the commentators were throwing around all these words I didn’t know. It is not easy! Then I tried to figure out what are the basic rules for soccer, I mean, what is the basic purpose for soccer? I found out the main goal is to kick or hit that ball into the other team’s net without using your hands, except if you’re the goalie, of course. And those games, wow, 90 minutes long, split into two halves. I realized that I need to know the rules better if I want to understand the game, so I started by looking up some basic stuff online.

There were so many words I didn’t know. Like, what’s a “F.T.”? Turns out, it means “Full Time.” And “GA”? That’s “Goal Against.” Then there’s “GD,” which is “Goal Difference.” - What’s a “shutout”?
This one confused me. Turns out, it’s something to do with the goalkeeper. - What about “sidelines”?
Apparently, they’re also called “touchlines.” And when the ball goes over them, it’s “gone into touch.”
After figuring out some basic rules and common words, I started watching games again. This time, things started to make a bit more sense. I could actually understand what was going on, at least a little bit. And you know what? It’s actually a pretty exciting sport once you get the hang of it. I am so happy that I can enjoy the game!
I kept reading and watching, and I even found some articles that explain whether men’s and women’s soccer rules are the same and decode a bunch of soccer jargon. I’m still no expert, but I feel like I’m finally getting it. I started to recognize some of the terms the commentators were using, and I could even follow the flow of the game a bit better.
