Alright, folks keep bringing up this ‘spiff sedrick rugby’ thing. Funny you should ask, really. It wasn’t some big plan or anything, just kind of stumbled into it.

It started way back when my nephew first got into mini-rugby. You know how it is, weekend mornings, freezing cold, standing on the sidelines. Anyway, the club was a bit… let’s say ‘rough around the edges’. Needed volunteers for everything. One Saturday, the usual guy who helped set up the pads and cones, this fella named Sedrick, wasn’t there. Just vanished. Panic stations, you know?
So I Stepped In
The coach looked desperate. I mean, kids running everywhere, parents asking questions. So I just started doing it. Grabbed the tackle bags, laid out the cones where I thought they should go. Didn’t really know what I was doing, just copying what I’d seen Sedrick do before. He always had this particular way of arranging things, real neat, real ‘spiff’, as the coach used to joke. That’s where the nickname stuck, I guess. ‘Spiff’ Sedrick.
So there I was, suddenly the temporary gear guy. My tasks were pretty basic:
- Haul the gear out of the shed.
- Set up the mini pitches.
- Make sure the right size balls were out.
- Try not to get run over by tiny humans.
Sedrick eventually came back a few weeks later, had some family stuff apparently. But for that short time, I was the one making sure things looked ‘spiff’. He actually showed me a few tricks when he returned, little things to make setup quicker. He wasn’t a bad guy, just a bit unreliable maybe.
The whole thing was kinda funny, really. I went from just watching my nephew to actually being part of the chaos for a bit. Didn’t get paid, obviously, just did it ’cause someone had to. You learn a lot just by jumping in and doing stuff, even if it’s just setting up cones for kids’ rugby.
So yeah, that’s my ‘spiff sedrick rugby’ story. Nothing groundbreaking. Just me, filling in for a guy named Sedrick who liked his gear tidy, trying to help a local club stay afloat one cold Saturday morning at a time. It’s just one of those things you do, you know?
