So, I wanted to mess around with Unturned and make a little mod. I figured adding some custom water could be cool. I called it “water unturned id”. Sounds simple enough, right? Wrong!

First, I fired up Unturned and dug around in the game files. I needed to find the basic water stuff, you know, to see how it’s put together. I poked around for a while, looking at textures and some config files. It’s all kind of a jumbled mess, to be honest.
Then, I started looking for tutorials online. You’d think there would be tons, but most of them were outdated or just plain confusing. I spent a good hour just scrolling through forums and watching videos that didn’t really help.
The Real Struggle
- I tried to just copy and paste some existing water code, changing the ID and hoping it would magically work. No dice.
- I messed with the texture files, thinking maybe I could just recolor the default water. Nope. Unturned didn’t like that at all.
- I even attempted to create an entirely new object from scratch, following some super vague guide I found. That was a complete disaster.
Honestly, I was about ready to give up. I spent probably three hours on this, and all I had to show for it was a headache and a bunch of broken game files. I kept tweaking this and that, and it didn’t help. I just couldn’t get this thing to play nice.
Finally, after taking a break and coming back to it with a fresh head, I stumbled upon a tiny little forum post. It was buried deep in some obscure thread, but it mentioned something about needing a specific material setting. I hadn’t even touched that!
So, I went back into the files, found the material setting, and tweaked it according to the forum post. I held my breath, launched the game… and BAM! There it was! My custom water, shimmering beautifully (well, as beautifully as blocky game water can shimmer).

Finally! I did it!
It was a way bigger pain than I expected, but hey, I learned something. Next time, I’ll definitely look for those obscure forum posts before I waste hours pulling my hair out!
