Alright, so check it, today I’m diving into something I’ve been messing with – the hip drop tackle. It’s been all over the place lately, lots of talk about how dangerous it is, and I wanted to see what the fuss was about, from a practical standpoint.

I started by watching a bunch of videos, you know, trying to get the gist of what everyone’s talking about. What exactly is a hip drop tackle? How’s it different from a regular tackle? After a few hours of YouTube, I thought I had a decent idea. Basically, it’s when you wrap up a guy, then swing your hips and drop your weight, causing him to get pinned and twisted awkwardly.
Next up, I went out to the backyard. Yeah, I know, sounds kinda dumb, but I needed to feel it. I grabbed a tackling dummy – the kind you see football players using – and started practicing the basic motion. The first few tries were super clunky. I felt like I was just falling all over the place. I was trying too hard, forcing the motion instead of letting it flow.
I slowed things down. Instead of trying to “tackle” the dummy, I focused on the individual movements. Wrap, grip, hip swing, drop. Breaking it down into smaller parts helped a ton. I practiced each movement separately, then slowly put them back together.
After a while, I started getting a better feel for it. I still wasn’t snapping anyone in half, but I was getting more comfortable with the hip drop motion. I noticed that the key was really in the timing. You gotta swing your hips at the right moment, just as you’re making contact. If you do it too early, you’ll miss. Too late, and it’s just a regular tackle.
The biggest thing I learned? It’s way harder than it looks. Those guys making hip drop tackles in the NFL? They’re athletes. They’re strong, fast, and they have years of training. Just trying it in my backyard, I could feel the strain on my knees and ankles. I can definitely see why it’s considered dangerous. I’m not a doctor or anything, but I can imagine how easily you could mess someone up doing that wrong.

So, yeah, that was my day playing around with the hip drop tackle. It’s definitely a technique I won’t be using on anyone anytime soon. Too risky, and honestly, I’m not good enough to pull it off without hurting myself or someone else.
Now I’m gonna go ice my back…maybe.
