Man, I was digging around the internet the other day, trying to find some old horse racing videos. You know, just for kicks. And I stumbled upon this gem – a video of Secretariat’s Belmont Stakes win in 1973. Holy moly, what a race!
First I went and searched for the original video and tried to find the best quality of it. I watched many of these videos and compared the video quality to select the best one I found.
So, I watched this video, and I was just blown away. This horse, Secretariat, he was a monster. I mean, he didn’t just win, he destroyed the competition. It said in the video info that he won by 31 lengths. I checked other websites and it is true! Can you believe that? It’s like he was in a different race altogether.

- I watched it, multiple times. Secretariat’s performance was unbelievable.
- I read that he won by 31 lengths and I checked multiple sources to confirm it, and it was true.

- Then I looked into why he was so good. I found out that his heart and lungs were much bigger than an average horse.
After watching the race, I did a little more digging. Turns out, this was part of Secretariat’s Triple Crown win. I was like, “No wonder he was so good!” But then I found out something even crazier. Apparently, Secretariat had a heart and lungs that were way bigger than a normal horse, like almost twice as big. It blew my mind to think a horse had such a huge advantage.
I read that his lineage can be traced to Princequilla, and there’s a mention of a person named Mary Yetman saying his heart was 2.5 times larger. That’s got to be some kind of record, right? It made me wonder if that was the secret to his success.
And there’s this other bit about him having a slightly different gait, which allowed him to get an extra stride in. I guess all these little things added up to make him a legend. I also read that he won 16 of his 21 races and earned over a million dollars, which was a lot back then.
It’s a shame that he couldn’t run as a 4-year-old. His owner said in an interview, “It’s a sad day, and yet it’s a great day. I certainly wish he could run as a 4-year-old. He’s a great horse and he loves to run.” It must have been a tough decision to retire him, but I guess they wanted to preserve his legacy.
