Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this thing called Statcast, trying to see if I could use it to get a little edge in sports betting. I’m not gonna lie, it’s pretty dense, but I think I’m starting to get the hang of it. Here is how I start:
First off, I started by just poking around the Baseball Savant website. That’s where all this Statcast data lives. I clicked on all the different tabs, looked at the leaderboards, and just generally tried to get a feel for what kind of information was available.
After that, I started digging into some specific stats. Things like exit velocity, launch angle, and expected stats like xBA and xSLG. These give you a better idea of how well a player is actually performing, beyond just the basic stats like batting average and home runs.
- I quickly realized that exit velocity is a big one. Guys who consistently hit the ball hard tend to do better overall.
- Launch angle is also super important. You want guys who can hit the ball in the air, but not too high. Fly balls turn into outs more often.
Then, I started looking at individual player pages. This is where you can really start to see how Statcast can be helpful. You can see a player’s spray chart, which shows you where they hit the ball. You can see their hot and cold zones. You can even see how they perform against different types of pitches.
Once I felt like I had a decent grasp of the data, I started trying to apply it to actual betting. What I found is that it is all about finding value. The bookies are smart, they know all this stuff too. But sometimes, they might overreact to a small sample size, or they might not fully account for a player’s underlying skills.
Here are some specific examples
- I found a player who was hitting the ball really hard, but his batting average was low. Turns out he was getting really unlucky on balls in play. I bet on him to have a good game, and he did.
- I saw a pitcher who had great expected stats, but his ERA was high. Turns out he was giving up a lot of home runs. I bet on the over for that game, and it hit.
Of course, it’s not always going to work. Betting is a game of chance, after all. But I do think that using Statcast data can give you a bit of an edge. At the very least, it makes watching the games more interesting.
