My Little Project: Looking into Tyler Herro’s Assists
So, I’ve been kicking around this thought about Tyler Herro and his assists. Everyone knows him as a scorer, right? That guy who can get hot in an instant. But I got it in my head to really check out his playmaking, to see what’s actually going on with his assist numbers and how he gets ’em.
First off, I just made it a point to watch him more closely during Heat games. Not just glancing at the box score later, though I did that too, of course. I mean, I really tried to focus on his passes when he was on the floor. What kind of situations was he in? Who was he looking for?
Then, I thought, okay, my eyes are one thing, but let’s see what the numbers say. So, I did a bit of digging. No secret pro-level scouting software here, just the usual spots online where you can find player stats. I started going through his game logs, looking for any patterns. Were his assist numbers trending up or down? Did they change against tougher defenses? Stuff like that.
- I looked at his average assists per game, the most basic thing.
- Then I tried to find his assist-to-turnover ratio. You know, is he generally making smart passes or just throwing the ball away trying to force things?
- I also thought about who he’s actually assisting. Is it mostly finding Bam Adebayo on rolls, or is he kicking it out to shooters on the perimeter?
And what I came away with? Well, it’s a bit of a mixed bag, if I’m being honest. Some games, you really see him trying to get others involved, making some smart reads and good passes. He’s got that natural flair, so when he connects, the passes can be pretty sweet to watch.
But then there are other games, or even just stretches within games, where it feels like he’s got blinders on and is only looking for his own shot. And look, sometimes that’s exactly what the Heat need from him – to be that aggressive, confident scorer. It just means his assist numbers aren’t always going to be super consistent. He’s not a traditional point guard, and we all know that. He’s a scorer first, a playmaker second. That seems to be his DNA.
I remember watching one game a while back. He had a pretty clear look to dish it to a teammate cutting to the basket for an easy one, but he decided to pull up for a tough, off-balance jumper. Brick. I was just sitting there on my couch, kinda sighing. But then, maybe the next quarter, he’d drop a perfect dime for an open three-pointer. So, it’s like, you see the flashes of good vision, but him being a high-assist guy consistently isn’t really his main job description.
It’s funny, before I really spent time focusing on this one little part of his game, I just had a general idea. Now, after actually going through the motions of watching for it and checking out the stats, I feel like I have a slightly better handle on that aspect of his play. It’s not always about the final number you see in the box score. It’s more about how he’s playing and when he decides to pass. And for Herro, the “how” can be exciting, but the “when” is often dictated by his scoring mentality, which, again, is often what he’s out there to do.
This whole thing, just picking one player and one part of their game to really examine, it actually makes watching the games more fun for me. I find myself noticing smaller details that I probably would have missed before. So yeah, that was my little adventure into Tyler Herro’s assists. No groundbreaking analysis here, just me satisfying a bit of curiosity and sharing what I observed. It’s just something I like to do now and then when a player or a specific skill piques my interest.
