Alright, so I finally made my way over to Lake of Isles Golf Course in CT. I’d been hearing folks talk about it for a good while, you know how it is, certain places just get that buzz. Been on my list to play, so when the chance came up, I jumped on it.
The morning of, I got all my gear together. Checked my bag, made sure I had enough balls – you never know with those water hazards, right? Threw the clubs in the trunk and started the drive. It wasn’t too bad, actually, pretty scenic in parts once I got off the main highway. Found the entrance easy enough; it’s got that kind of impressive, well-kept look right from the get-go.
So, I pulled up to the clubhouse. It’s a nice building, definitely has that upscale feel. Walked inside, and the pro shop was pretty slick. The folks there were friendly, got me checked in without any fuss. They pointed me towards the practice facilities. I always like to hit a few before a round, just to get loose, so I headed over to the range. Spent a good 20 minutes there, trying to find some sort of swing, then rolled a few putts on the practice green. Seemed pretty quick, which got me thinking.
Out on The Course
Then it was time to actually get started on the round. We teed off, and man, the course itself is something to see. They really did a job carving it out of the landscape. Lots of trees, the water comes into play on a fair few holes, just like the name suggests. The conditioning was top-notch, I gotta say. Fairways were like carpet, and the greens, well, they were pure, but fast, just like I suspected from the practice green. Took me a few holes to really get the pace down.
I remember one hole, a par 4 with water all down one side. I tried to play it safe, aimed away from the trouble, and of course, I pushed it a bit. Ended up in the rough, but managed to salvage a bogey. That’s golf, eh? You try your best, and sometimes the course just has other plans.
There were some really memorable holes. The views, especially when you’re near the bigger parts of the lake, were pretty stunning. I stopped a couple of times just to take it all in. It’s not just about hitting the ball; sometimes you just gotta appreciate where you are. The layout really made me think about each shot. You couldn’t just whale away with the driver on every tee. I had to club down a few times, really focus on placement.
The bunkers were well-maintained too, which is always a good sign. Found myself in a couple, unfortunately. Splashed out okay on one, thinned another one across the green. You win some, you lose some with sand.
Wrapping Up the Day
After what felt like a good battle, we finished up on the 18th. Walked off the green, feeling pretty satisfied, even if my score wasn’t going to break any records. It’s more about the experience on a course like that.
We headed back towards the clubhouse. Decided to grab a drink and something small to eat. Sat outside for a bit, just talking about the round, the good shots, the bad ones. It’s always good to unwind like that afterwards. The staff in the grill area were just as good as in the pro shop.
So, Lake of Isles. Yeah, I had a good day out. It’s definitely a challenging track, but fair. You hit good shots, you get rewarded. You hit bad ones, well, you pay the price, especially with all that water and the tricky greens. It’s one of those places that I’d say you should try to play if you get the chance and you’re serious about your golf. It’s not exactly a casual Tuesday afternoon knock-about kind of place, given the reputation and likely the price, but for a proper golf experience, it delivered the goods. I’d definitely consider going back, maybe try the other course if they have one, just to see how it compares. Solid day, good memories made.
