So, I got this itch, right? Baldur’s Gate 3. Everyone’s talking about it, and I’m thinking, “Man, this would be amazing on my Switch.” You know, cozy on the couch, maybe in bed, not chained to my desk. That was the dream, the big idea that got this whole thing started.

First thing I did, naturally, was grab my Switch. Fired up the eShop, full of hope. Typed in “Baldur’s Gate 3.” Search. And… nothing. Zilch. Nada. Just a bunch of other games, but not the one I was looking for. That was a bit of a downer, not gonna lie. I thought, “Huh, that’s weird. Such a massive game, why wouldn’t it be here?”
So, I went online. Started digging around, forums, gaming news sites, the usual spots. And yeah, tons of people were asking the same thing. “BG3 on Switch, when?” “Is it even possible?” Lots of chatter, lots of wishful thinking. It felt like I wasn’t alone in wanting this, which was kinda comforting, I guess.
But then, you start reading the more, let’s say, realistic takes. People talking about the game’s size, the graphics, the sheer processing power it needs. My Switch, I love it, it’s fantastic for Mario and Zelda and all those indies. But Baldur’s Gate 3? That’s a whole different league. It’s like trying to fit an elephant into a Mini Cooper. It just ain’t built for that kind of heavy lifting.
Then I heard some folks mentioning cloud streaming. Stuff like GeForce NOW, or using Steam Link if you’ve already got the game on a decent PC. That got my gears turning. “Okay,” I thought, “maybe there’s a workaround.” I had BG3 on my computer, so Steam Link seemed like the path of least resistance to try out first.
So, I got to it. Made sure BG3 was running fine on my PC. Then I downloaded the Steam Link app on my Switch. Had to fiddle with the network settings a bit, make sure everything was talking to each other nicely. You know how it is with tech sometimes, it needs a bit of coaxing.

And then, moment of truth. Launched it. And bam! Baldur’s Gate 3, streaming from my PC, right there on my Switch screen. It was pretty cool, not gonna lie. For a second, it felt like I’d cracked the code. “I’m playing BG3 on my Switch!” I triumphantly announced to my empty living room.
But, and there’s always a “but” with these things, isn’t there? It wasn’t exactly the smooth, native experience I’d fantasized about. First off, your Wi-Fi has to be rock solid. I mean, perfect. Any little hiccup in the signal, and the screen would get all blocky, or it would stutter, or the input lag would make it a pain to play. And playing it truly “on the go,” like on a bus or something? Forget it. Unless you’ve got some kind of super-powered mobile hotspot with data to burn, it’s just not practical.
Then there were the controls. The Switch Joy-Cons are great for Switch games. But mapping all the complex controls of a PC-first RPG like Baldur’s Gate 3 onto them? It was… an adventure. You can do it, technically. But it felt clunky. Lots of holding down one button to access another set of commands. Not ideal when a Mind Flayer is about to eat your brain, you know?
So, after all that experimenting, here’s where I landed. Baldur’s Gate 3 natively on the Switch? Yeah, don’t hold your breath. The little machine just doesn’t have the muscle for it, plain and simple. It’s not a knock on the Switch; it’s just reality. Can you sort of, kind of, get it running via streaming if you jump through some hoops? Sure. It’s a neat party trick. But it’s a compromise, a workaround. It’s not the dream.
I guess for now, I’ll just stick to playing it on my PC where it runs like a dream, or sometimes on my Steam Deck, which is a bit more up to the task for portable play. That pure, seamless Baldur’s Gate 3 experience on the Nintendo Switch, though? That’s still firmly in the “wouldn’t it be nice if” category. But hey, a guy can keep hoping, right? Maybe some future, super-powered Switch 2 will make it happen. Until then, the dream lives on, mostly in my head.
