My Head Spin Journey: From Wobbly to Wowing in Two Days
Okay so I’ve been obsessed with Stewie Griffin’s head spin move for ages. Like, how does that little dude spin so smooth? Decided to try it myself this weekend. Grabbed some knee pads and a thick beanie – ’cause my living room floor ain’t no dance studio.
Day 1 was brutal. Seriously thought my neck would snap. Planted my hands shoulder-width apart, plopped my head down to make a triangle with my hands. Feet? They just flopped around like fish outta water. Tried holding the freeze… lasted maybe two seconds before crashing sideways. Did this like five times. Neck started screaming. Note to self: THICKER HEAD COVERING NEEDED.
Changed tactics. Focused just on freezing solid first. Locked my elbows straight, shoved my weight onto my forehead. Slowly kicked one leg back, one forward. Tried opening ’em sideways like a wonky starfish. Wobbly as heck. Realized my balance came from my belly muscles tightening way more than I expected. Who knew abs helped with headstands?
Day 2 was the game-changer. Wore two beanies stacked. Way less pain. Mastered the freeze with legs wide for about ten seconds – felt like winning gold. Okay, time to spin or bust. Still nervous. Here’s what worked:
- Hands are decoration mostly. Leaned weight hard onto my forehead.
- Kicked legs like crazy. Started swinging them together side-to-side like windshield wipers while frozen. Didn’t turn my head yet. Whole body swayed. Felt ridiculous but built that sideways balance.
- The Launch: Took a deep breath, shoved off HARD with my hands sweeping sideways, twisted my waist like snapping a towel, legs followed in a flail. And… bam! Almost did a full turn! Stumbled after 3/4 spin but progress.
Kept at it. Sweaty, dizzy, laughing like an idiot. Key was starting the leg swing first, then whipping the waist while pushing off with my hands. By sunset? Got three decent half-spins in a row before landing like a sack of potatoes. Neck felt tender but not broken. Victory!
Lessons learned?
- Stretching legs wide REALLY helps balance.
- It’s about momentum from your hips, not pure neck power.
- Do not cheap out on head padding. Seriously.
Totally worth the headache. Still look nothing like Stewie though. Maybe next weekend…
