Springbok Coaching for Beginners: Basic Drills & Techniques!

Okay, so today I messed around with “springbok coaching.” I’d heard about it, seen some stuff online, but never actually tried it myself. So, I decided to jump in and see what all the fuss was about.

Springbok Coaching for Beginners: Basic Drills & Techniques!

Getting Started

First things first, I needed to figure out what I actually wanted to achieve. Was I looking for fitness tips? Life coaching? I went down a bit of a rabbit hole, and found mostly about sports and rugby coaching. I figured, why not give it a shot?

I started by just watching some videos. Lots of them. Some were really basic, others were super intense and tactical. I picked out a few that seemed geared towards beginners – drills I could actually do without looking like a complete fool.

The Actual Coaching Part (Or My Attempt At It)

Next, I tried to put what I’d learned into practice. I went out to my backyard, grabbed a ball (not a rugby ball, just a regular one, baby steps!), and started practicing some of the basic handling drills. Passing to myself, catching, trying to keep my form right. It was… interesting. Let’s just say I have a newfound respect for those athletes.

  • First drill: Simple passing against a wall. I focused on the spiral motion of the ball. It did not go well, many drops.
  • Second drill:Practiced some * tip that work for me is keep eyes on the ball.
  • Third attempt: Running with ball, this time, things were a little better, my body start remember some movement from videos.

My Takeaways

After about an hour, I was sweaty, a little frustrated, but also kinda proud of myself for actually trying something new. I definitely didn’t become a rugby pro overnight (shocking, I know!), but I did learn a few things:

  • It’s harder than it looks! Those guys make it look so easy.
  • It’s actually a pretty good workout. I was definitely feeling it the next day.
  • It’s fun to try new things, even if you’re terrible at them.

So, will I continue with my “springbok coaching” journey? Maybe! I might try to find some more structured resources, maybe even a local group or something. For now, I’m happy with my little backyard experiment. It was a good reminder that it’s okay to be a beginner, and that sometimes, the best way to learn is just to do.
