Scottie Scheffler full swing analysis what makes him so consistent

So I saw this video breakdown of Scottie Scheffler’s swing yesterday and man, it got me thinking. Dude is crazy consistent lately, winning everything. Figured I’d try to copy some of that magic during my range session this morning. Total experiment mode, you know?

Starting Out – Messy as Usual

Grabbed my 7-iron first, like always. Took my normal swing. Results? Predictable. Some shots flew okay, others hooked left, a few ducked right like scared birds. Nothing like Scottie’s boringly perfect ball flight. Felt annoyed.

Trying the Shoulder Thing

Remembered that video highlighting how Scottie’s shoulders turn really level in the backswing, not all steep. So I tried that. Turned back focusing on keeping my lead shoulder low and wide. Immediate disaster.

  • First attempt: Barely clipped the ball. Weak pop-up flew about 50 yards.
  • Second shot: Felt stiff. Topped it. Scorched the turf, ball rolled pathetically.
  • Third try: Overdid the turn. Wound up twisted sideways like a pretzel. Wild slice. Just embarrassing.

So much for that brilliant idea. Body felt awkward. Nothing felt natural or powerful.

Messing With His “Slow Move”

Okay, shoulder disaster. Shifted focus. Noticed how Scottie starts his downswing super slow, almost lazy looking, before firing hard. Tried mimicking that lazy start. Wiggled my hips slowly toward the target first.

  • Reaction: My arms got impatient. Threw the club down way too early, dumped the club underneath.
  • Result: Low rocket hooks. One nearly took out the guy practicing putting 20 yards away. Yelled “Fore!” like a fool.

Clearly my timing wasn’t matching Scottie’s rhythm. Just felt out of sync and powerless.

The Head Staying Put?

Saw another clip zoomed in on Scottie’s head. That thing barely moves. Solid. Tried holding my head dead still during the swing. Stared hard at a spot on the ball.

This was the worst yet. Felt locked up. Whole body tensed. Took these little, choppy swings. Shots went nowhere, super short and weak. Total paralysis by analysis. Head hurting now. Maybe literally.

What Actually Seemed to Help

Ready to give up. Started doing my usual thing again, frustrated. Then remembered Scottie’s stupid solid lower body action. How his legs look planted, stable. Pushed my feet harder into the mat. Focused on just that – feeling heavy down below.

Tried swinging normally, but really grounding my feet.

  • First one: Contact felt thumpy and solid. Ball flew higher than normal. Better.
  • Next few: Kept focusing JUST on feet being heavy, legs stable. Didn’t force anything up top. Ball started flying straighter, more boring. Not magic, but noticeably tighter dispersion.

Okay, maybe there’s something to this base stability thing? Noticed on replay how Scottie seems “quiet” down there too.

The Towel Drill That Finally Clicked

Remembered an old drill. Stuck a folded towel under both armpits. Sounds silly. Point is to keep your arms connected to your body, preventing that flying elbow mess.

Swing felt restricted at first, like I couldn’t swing. But I made myself do it slow.

  • Half swings: Just focused on keeping towel tucked. Club came down on a better path. Thump. Clean contact.
  • Full swings: Still kept towel secure. My arms couldn’t flail wide. Instead, I had to turn my body more through the ball to hit it.

Ball flight straightened out dramatically. Hit like 5 shots in a row dead straight. Not Scottie long, but predictable. Kinda shocked me. Turns out my arms were too separate from my turn – no connection. Scottie’s got that whole unit turning together.

Takeaway after sweating my way through buckets:

  • My lower body is a mess. Without quiet feet and stability, nothing works right. That’s foundational.
  • Connection matters. That towel drill thing? Felt weird but forced my arms and body to work together like one piece, not flapping around. Scottie makes it look effortless.
  • Stop chasing positions. Copying his shoulder turn or head stillness solo didn’t help. It’s how everything fits together seamlessly. Need to build that feeling.

So yeah. Scottie makes it look stupidly simple. Turns out it’s crazy complex coordination. My main wins today were boring legs and the stupid towel drill. Body feels sore, but the ball flight… kinda worth it? We’ll see if it lasts past tomorrow.
