Okay, so today I decided to tackle something I’ve been putting off for a while – getting a proper feel for the Sandown International Motor Raceway. I’ve watched races there, seen videos, but never actually virtually driven it myself. So, I fired up my simulator.

First things first, I needed to find a good version of the track. I use a couple of different racing sims, so I checked my usual sources for track mods. I found a few options, some older, some newer. I went with one that seemed to have the most recent updates and good reviews. You know, gotta avoid those bumpy, glitchy tracks!
Then I loaded it into the simulator. I’ve spent so much time driving that I felt like I was really there.
Getting the Feel of the Track
Next, I picked a car I’m fairly comfortable with – I didn’t want to be fighting the car and learning a new track at the same time. Something with decent handling, not too crazy powerful. I just started with that and started by taking it slow. Really slow. I wanted to learn to corner right.
- I started with some slow laps, just getting a feel for the layout. Focusing on the braking points, turn-in points, and where the track goes cambered or off-camber. Sandown has some tricky corners, especially that fast, sweeping section after the back straight.
- I gradually increased my speed, paying attention to how the car behaved at different speeds and on different lines.
- I experimented with different braking points. Trying out that classic “slow in, fast out” approach, and seeing how early or late I could brake without losing control.
Finding the Fast Line
After I felt I had the basics down, I started searching for the fastest racing line. You know that you gotta find that line.
- I watched some online videos of fast laps at Sandown. And I tried to mimic what those drivers were doing.
- I paid attention to where they were braking, how much curb they were using, and how they were positioning the car on the track.
- I experimented and tried to find small improvements, a little bit of time here, a little bit there.
Honestly, it was a pretty fun experience. I still have a lot to learn about Sandown, but I feel like I made some good progress today. It’s definitely a track that rewards smooth driving and precise inputs. I’ll keep practicing, and maybe one day I’ll be able to set some truly fast laps there! Or maybe I’ll stick to watching the pros do it – that’s pretty fun too!
