Putter Stance: Simple Tips to Improve Your Putting (Easy Guide)

Okay, so I’ve been messing around with my putting stance lately, and let me tell you, it’s been a journey! I started off like most folks, I guess – feet shoulder-width apart, kinda square to the target line. It felt… okay, I guess. But my putting? Super inconsistent. Some days I’d be draining everything, other days I couldn’t buy a putt.

Experiment Time

So, I started tinkering. First, I widened my stance. Like, really widened it. Felt weird, almost like I was going to topple over. I did a few practice strokes. It did give me a more stable base, I’ll give it that. But it also felt kinda restrictive, like I couldn’t get a good feel for the flow of the stroke.

  • Wide Stance: Stable, but restrictive.

Then, I went the other way. I narrowed my stance, bringing my feet closer together. This felt… looser, I guess? I could definitely feel the movement in my stroke more. But, whoa, was it unstable! I felt like a gentle breeze could knock me off balance. I practiced a few,but it just felt wrong.

  • Narrow Stance: Mobile, but unstable.

Finding the Sweet Spot

So, wide was too wide, narrow was too narrow. Time to channel my inner Goldilocks. I started experimenting with different foot positions. I tried staggering my feet, with one slightly ahead of the other. I played around with the angle of my feet, pointing them slightly outwards, then slightly inwards.

Finally, I found something that started to click. I ended up with a stance that’s slightly wider than shoulder-width, but not ridiculously so. My feet are staggered, with my left foot (I’m a righty) a little bit behind my right. And my toes are pointed just a tad outwards. This felt good. it felt like, stable but not stiff, and I could actually feel the putter head swinging.

I’ve practiced a few more times with this method, it feels much better!

Still a Work in Progress

Now, I’m not saying I’ve suddenly become a putting wizard. Far from it! But this new stance feels way more comfortable and consistent. I’m still working on getting the feel for distance control, but at least I feel like I’m starting from a solid foundation. It’s all about finding what works for you, and this little experiment has definitely helped me get closer to that.

I also tried different ball positions, forward and back in my stance, that help me control the start line and the roll more consistently.

Putting, am I right? Always something to tweak!
