Okay, so I decided to check out the Opening Day at Del Mar for 2024. I’ve heard about this event for years, and it always seemed like such a big deal. This year, I finally decided to just go for it and see what all the fuss was about.

First things first, I got my tickets online a few weeks in advance. I figured it would be a madhouse trying to buy them on the day of, and I was right. I heard from folks later that they were pretty much sold out. Phew, dodged a bullet there!
Getting Ready
Next up, I had to figure out what to wear. I know Opening Day is famous for the fashion, those big hats and fancy dresses. I’m not really a hat person, but I did want to look presentable. I ended up going with a nice sundress and some comfy sandals, because, let’s be real, you’re on your feet a lot.
The Big Day Arrives
So, the day finally arrived. I took an Uber to the track to avoid the parking nightmare. And man, when I got there, the atmosphere was electric. There were people everywhere, all dressed up, sipping on drinks, and just buzzing with excitement.
I wandered around for a while, just soaking it all in. I placed a few small bets, mostly just for fun, since I don’t really know much about horse racing. Honestly, I spent more time people-watching than actually watching the races. It was so interesting to see all the different outfits and the energy of the crowd.
- Grabbed a mint julep, because when in Rome, right? It was surprisingly strong!
- Checked out the hat contest. Some of those hats were insane – like, works of art!
- Snagged a few pictures for the ‘gram. Gotta document these things, you know?
Later in the afternoon, I found a spot near the rail and watched a couple of races. It was pretty thrilling to see the horses thunder past. Even though I didn’t win any money, it was still a cool experience.

By the end of the day, my feet were killing me, but I was so glad I went. Opening Day at Del Mar definitely lived up to the hype. It’s not just about the horse racing; it’s about the whole experience, the fashion, the people, the atmosphere. Would I go again? Absolutely! But next time, I’m definitely wearing more comfortable shoes, maybe even bring a hat to join the contest!
