Alright, let’s talk about my little adventure out to Old Marsh in Maine. Been meaning to get out there for ages, and finally carved out some time. It’s not some grand expedition, just a local spot, but sometimes those are the best, right?
First off, getting there was pretty straightforward. I hopped in the car, punched the address into the GPS – you know, the usual. The drive itself was nice, classic Maine scenery. Lots of trees, a few glimpses of the water, the kind of stuff that makes you feel relaxed even before you get where you’re going.
Once I arrived, I spent a bit just scoping things out. Old Marsh isn’t huge, but it’s got a good mix of habitats. There’s the open marsh itself, of course, plus some wooded areas and tidal creeks snaking through everything. I decided to start by following one of the trails that runs along the edge of the marsh.
The walking was easy enough. The trail was mostly flat, with a few muddy spots here and there – nothing my boots couldn’t handle. Right away, I started seeing birds. Lots of the usual suspects – red-winged blackbirds, sparrows flitting around in the bushes. But I also spotted a few herons lurking in the shallows, which was cool.
I spent a good couple of hours just wandering around, taking pictures, and soaking it all in. The light was really nice, especially as the afternoon went on. It gave everything this golden glow that made it feel extra peaceful. I even managed to catch a glimpse of a muskrat swimming across one of the creeks. Those little guys are surprisingly quick!
Now, I’m no expert birder or anything, but I do enjoy trying to identify the different species I see. I had my binoculars and a field guide with me, and I managed to ID a few new ones for my list. Always feels good to learn something new, you know?
As the sun started to dip lower, I decided to head back. The walk back was just as pleasant as the way in, maybe even more so with the sunset colors painting the sky. I took a few more pictures, just trying to capture the moment.
All in all, it was a great little trip. Nothing fancy, but exactly what I needed to recharge and reconnect with nature. Old Marsh might not be the most famous spot in Maine, but it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for a peaceful place to spend an afternoon.
When I got back home, I dumped my boots by the door (they were definitely muddy!), grabbed a beer, and started going through my photos. It’s always fun to relive the experience and pick out my favorites. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!
