Okay, so, today I was messing around with the crossword in the paper, just killing some time, you know? And I came across this clue, “Staff symbol.” At first, I was like, what the heck does that even mean? I mean, I’ve seen those squiggly lines and dots on music sheets, but I never really paid them any mind.
So, I started by trying to remember anything I might know about music. I took piano lessons for like a year when I was a kid, but all I could recall was “Hot Cross Buns.” Not exactly helpful. Then, I thought, maybe there’s something online about this. I grabbed my phone and started googling stuff like “music symbols” and “lines on music paper.”
I scrolled through a bunch of websites, most of them were too complicated, with all these fancy terms I didn’t understand. But then I found a couple that were more basic. They talked about something called a “staff,” which is apparently those five lines where the notes go. And then there are symbols that tell you what the notes are and how to play them.
The first thing I noticed was this curvy symbol at the beginning of each staff. One site said it’s called a “clef.” That sounded kind of familiar. Apparently, there are different kinds of clefs, like the “treble clef” and the “bass clef.” They look different and they tell you what range of notes you’re playing. Like, high notes or low notes.

Then I saw some other symbols, like ones that look like little flags or dots. Those are the actual notes, and they tell you how long to hold a sound. There’s a “quarter note,” a “half note,” and others. I even saw one called a “whole note” that’s just a circle.

There were also these symbols that look like little “b”s or “#”s. Those are called “flats” and “sharps,” and they change the pitch of a note a little bit. It’s like making it a little higher or a little lower.

I even found a symbol that means you’re supposed to be quiet for a bit. It’s called a “rest.” Kind of funny, like the music is taking a little break.

After looking at all these different symbols, I went back to the crossword clue, “Staff symbol.” And then it clicked! The answer had to be one of these symbols. Since the answer needed to be four letters, I guessed “clef,” and it fit! I tried the other answers as well, then I realized there may be more than one answer to this crossword. I kept trying all four letters answers I found on the Internet to see if they matched, and some of them matched! Like the other four letters answer “rest” also work! What a surprise!
