Need a recap of Grudens coaching stops? Here are jon gruden past teams coached.

So, the other day I was just kicking back, flicking through channels, trying to find something, anything, to watch. Landed on one of those classic NFL game replays, and who do I see on the sideline? Jon Gruden. Yep, “Chucky” himself, pacing and scowling. Man, seeing him really sent me down a rabbit hole, thinking about his whole coaching career. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, hasn’t it?

My Trip Down Memory Lane

I started trying to actually list out all the head coaching gigs he had in the NFL. You know how it is, sometimes the details get a bit fuzzy over time, especially with coaches who’ve been around different locker rooms. I was sitting there, wracking my brain, like, “Okay, where did he start, and where did he end up?” It’s funny what you remember and what you forget.

So, I did a little mental digging, and here’s what I pieced together from my own memory banks, plus a little jogging of said memory just to make sure I wasn’t totally off base:

  • Oakland Raiders – This was his first big shot as a head coach. Back in the day, late 90s, early 2000s. He definitely made a mark there. Young guy, lots of energy. They were pretty good with him.
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Then came the move that shocked a lot of people. The Bucs actually traded for him! Draft picks and cash, the whole shebang, just for a coach. I remember thinking that was wild. And what happens? First year in Tampa, 2002 season, he takes them all the way and they win the Super Bowl. Beat his old team, the Raiders, in that Super Bowl, too! Talk about a story. That was their first-ever Super Bowl win, a massive deal for that franchise.
  • Las Vegas Raiders – After a long break doing TV, he came back. Surprise, surprise, it was with the Raiders again, though they were in the process of becoming the Las Vegas Raiders. That second stint, though… it was something. Started with a huge contract, tons of hype. But then, well, we all know how that ended midway through the 2021 season. That whole email scandal thing came out, and he resigned. Just like that. Poof.

It’s quite the resume when you look at it. From a young gun making waves, to a Super Bowl champion, then a long hiatus, and finally a dramatic return and an even more dramatic exit. You don’t see careers like that every day.

And speaking of the Raiders, man, that organization has had its share of coaching sagas. It feels like they’ve shelled out a good bit of cash over the years to coaches who weren’t even coaching for them anymore. Gruden’s situation was obviously unique with the resignation, but the whole “paying coaches not to work” isn’t exactly a new theme for them if you look back. It’s a tough gig, coaching in the NFL, and even tougher sometimes with certain teams, I guess.

Anyway, that was my little dive into Jon Gruden’s coaching past. It’s interesting to look back sometimes, isn’t it? Football history is full of these kinds of stories. Makes you wonder what the next chapter will be for some of these guys.
