Montreal Royals: The Ultimate Guide (History, Players & More)

Okay, here’s my blog post about my “Montreal Royals” deep dive:

Montreal Royals: The Ultimate Guide (History, Players & More)

So, I got curious about the “Montreal Royals” today. I’d heard the name before, probably in some hockey context, but I really didn’t know much. I decided to do a deep dive and find out more.

Starting From Scratch

First, I just typed “Montreal Royals” into a search engine. You know, the usual starting point. Boom. Right away, I saw it was a minor league baseball team. I’d had a hunch it was some kind of sports team.

Okay, baseball. Cool. I clicked on the Wikipedia page, ’cause that’s usually a good overview. I quickly scanned through the intro and, whoa, Jackie Robinson! He played for the Royals before he broke the color barrier in the major leagues. That’s huge!

Digging Deeper

I spent a good chunk of time just reading the Wikipedia article. Learned about their history, from way back in the late 1800s, all the way up to the 1960s when they moved and became a different team. Lots of names I’d never heard of, some I recognized from baseball history. It was pretty interesting to see how the team evolved over time.

  • Found out they were a farm team for the Brooklyn Dodgers. That’s the Jackie Robinson connection.
  • Discovered they played at Delorimier Stadium. I even looked up some pictures of the old stadium. Looked pretty cool in its day.
  • Read about some of the other famous players who came through the Royals. Names like Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe.

Chasing Rabbits

After Wikipedia, I started just poking around other sites. You know how it is, you see a name or a fact, and you just gotta follow that thread.

I ended up on some old newspaper archive sites. It was a little tricky to navigate, but I managed to find some game recaps and articles from back in the day. That was a trip! Reading the way sports were written about back then, so different from today.

Wrapping Up

I probably spent a good two or three hours on this whole thing. I didn’t become an expert on the Montreal Royals, but I definitely learned a lot. It was cool to connect this seemingly random name with a really important piece of baseball history, and even broader history with Jackie Robinson. That’s the fun of these little internet explorations, you never know what you’ll find!
