Okay, so I wanted to keep better track of my running races. You know, not just signing up and then scrambling to remember the details. I decided to create a simple, easily accessible “nyc race calendar.” Nothing fancy, just something practical.
Figuring Out the Starting Point
First, I brainstormed what I really needed. I didn’t want a complicated app, just a straightforward list. I thought, “Okay, what are the bare essentials?” Date, race name, distance, and maybe location – that seemed like a good start.
Choosing My Tools (or Lack Thereof)
I’m not a coder, so I ruled out building anything from scratch. I figured a simple spreadsheet would do the trick. Google Sheets seemed perfect because I could access it from my phone and computer.
Building the Basic Spreadsheet
I opened up a new Google Sheet and made some columns:
- Date
- Race Name
- Distance
- Location
- Notes (for anything extra, like packet pickup info)
Pretty basic, right? The beauty is in the simplicity.
Populating the Calendar (The Manual Labor)
This is where the real work began. I started searching for NYC races. I opened a few local running club websites. Then it was just a matter of copying and pasting the race information into my spreadsheet. Date, name, distance, location – all went into their respective columns. I added any notes that seemed important, like if registration was open or not.
Keeping it Updated
It works great. Now, whenever I hear about a race, I just add it to the sheet. It takes like two minutes, and I have a running (pun intended!) list of all the races I’m interested in. It’s not automatic, but it’s easy enough to maintain.
