Life After Silk Road: Where is Ron Silk Now?

Well, let me tell ya ’bout this fella, Ron Silk. Sounds like a fancy name, don’t it? Like somethin’ you’d find in a Sears catalog back in the day. But this Ron ain’t no fancy pants model, no sirree. He’s a racer, a stock car racer, to be exact.

Now, I ain’t no expert on racin’, mind you. I know a horse from a cow, and a tractor from a pickup truck, and that’s about it. But this Ron Silk fella, he drives them NASCAR cars, the ones that go zoomin’ around in circles real fast. They say he’s pretty good at it, too. Been doin’ it for a long time, seems like. Born in 1983, they say. Heck, I was already milkin’ cows and raisin’ chickens by then.

  • He races in somethin’ called the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. Don’t ask me what that means, but it sounds important.
  • They say he’s been competin’ full-time, which I guess means he ain’t got no other job. Lucky him, I say. Wish I coulda just raced cars all day instead of haulin’ hay.

This year, though, things ain’t lookin’ so good for ol’ Ron. They said somethin’ about his “quest for a title” havin’ to wait till 2025. Sounds like he had some trouble with his car, somethin’ with the motor. Happens to the best of ’em, I reckon. Just like my old tractor, sometimes it just quits on ya, no matter how much you sweet talk it.

I heard tell that at the start of June, he was doin’ real well, had a big lead, 15 points they said. That’s a lot, I figure, like havin’ 15 extra chickens layin’ eggs every day. But then somethin’ happened, and now he’s retired from the “event,” whatever that means. Maybe he just got tired of goin’ in circles all the time. I know I would.

Now, there’s another thing I heard about a “Silk Road,” but it ain’t got nothin’ to do with this Ron fella. This other Silk Road was somethin’ on the internet, a place where folks bought and sold things, some legal, some not so legal. Drugs, they said. Can you believe it? Folks sellin’ drugs on that there internet thingamajig. The FBI shut it down a few years back, in 2013. Good riddance, I say. Nothin’ but trouble, that kind of stuff.

This Silk Road, it wasn’t no real road, ya know. More like a secret market, a place where folks could buy and sell stuff without nobody knowin’. They used somethin’ called Bitcoins, which I don’t understand at all. Sounds like somethin’ outta a science fiction movie. But it was a big deal back then, they say, lots of money changin’ hands. Makes you wonder what folks will come up with next.

But then there’s the real Silk Road, the one that’s been around for centuries. A network of tradin’ routes, they say. From China all the way over here, I guess. Folks tradin’ silk and spices and all sorts of things. That’s the kind of tradin’ I understand. You give me somethin’, I give you somethin’. Honest and simple.

So, ya see, there’s three different things with the name “Silk” in ’em. One’s a racer, one’s a shady internet market, and one’s an old tradin’ route. All different, but all interestin’ in their own way. Life’s funny like that, ain’t it? You think you know somethin’, and then somethin’ else comes along and throws ya for a loop. But that’s what keeps things excitin’, I guess. Even for an old woman like me, there’s always somethin’ new to learn, even if it’s just about a fella named Ron Silk and his racin’ cars.

Seems like this Ron Silk was doin’ alright for a while there, leading the pack and all. They said it was the biggest lead all season, so he must’ve been doin’ somethin’ right. But racin’ is a fickle thing, just like farmin’. One day you’re harvestin’ a bumper crop, the next day a hailstorm comes along and ruins everything. Same with racin’, I reckon. One minute you’re in the lead, the next minute your motor blows up, and you’re sittin’ on the sidelines.

And that’s what happened to Ron Silk, it seems. He was doin’ great, and then somethin’ went wrong, and now he’s gotta wait till next year to try again. Well, that’s life, ain’t it? You win some, you lose some. You just gotta pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep on goin’. Just like I did when that old mule of mine decided to kick me in the shin. Hurt like the dickens, but I got back up and kept on farmin’. Ron Silk, he’ll get back up too, I bet. He’ll fix that motor of his, and he’ll be back racin’ again before you know it. He’s a tough fella, I can tell. You gotta be tough to make it in this world, whether you’re racin’ cars or milkin’ cows.

Anyway, that’s all I know about this Ron Silk fella. Hope it was interestin’ enough for ya. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go check on my chickens.
