Alright, let’s talk about that orange sports bike project I tackled. It was a wild ride, literally!

First off, I decided I needed a project to keep me busy, you know? Stumbled upon this old, beat-up sports bike online. Thing was a mess – faded paint, rusty bits, the whole nine yards. But something about the frame just screamed potential. So, I bought it. Cheap, thankfully.
The real work started when I got it back to my garage. Stripped the whole thing down, every nut and bolt. That alone took a weekend. Found even more rust than I initially thought. Ugh. But hey, no turning back now!
Next up was the bodywork. The original fairings were cracked and scratched beyond repair. I considered getting new ones, but where’s the fun in that? I opted for fiberglass. Never worked with it before, but YouTube is your friend, right? Spent a good couple of weeks shaping, sanding, and cursing at that fiberglass. Itchy stuff!
Then came the color. I knew I wanted something bold, something that would pop. Orange! Specifically, a bright, almost obnoxious orange. Sprayed several coats of primer, then the orange. Followed by a couple layers of clear coat. Let it dry for a week. The finish was glossy and smooth, exactly what I was going for.
While the paint was drying, I focused on the mechanical stuff. The engine needed some serious love. I replaced all the gaskets, cleaned the carbs, and gave it a full tune-up. Replaced the chain and sprockets too. Basically, anything that looked worn out got the boot.

Reassembling everything was like putting together a giant puzzle. Made sure every wire was connected properly, every bolt was tightened to spec. Took my time, double-checking everything. Didn’t want any surprises on the road.
Finally, the day came when I could fire it up. Cranked it over a few times, and then… VROOM! It roared to life! Sounded amazing. Took it for a quick spin around the block. Felt good. Real good.
It’s not perfect, mind you. There are still a few things I want to tweak. But for now, I’m riding it. And every time I do, I get a huge grin on my face. It’s a head-turner, that’s for sure. And the best part is, I built it myself. That orange sports bike is my baby!
- Stripped down the bike to bare frame.
- Fabricated new fiberglass fairings.
- Applied multiple coats of vibrant orange paint.
- Rebuilt the engine and replaced worn components.
- Reassembled the entire motorcycle.
Lessons Learned
Fiberglass is a pain, but worth it. Always double-check your wiring. And most importantly, don’t be afraid to try something new. You might just surprise yourself.
