How to properly play a golf provisional shot (simple steps every golfer should know well)

Man, playing golf can really get you sometimes. You think you’ve hit a decent shot, and then, poof, it’s just gone. Into the trees, deep rough, or worse, out of bounds. I’ve spent so much time looking for balls, I tell ya.

So, one day, after a particularly wild slice off the tee, one of my buddies mentioned hitting a “provisional shot.” I was like, huh? What’s that now? Sounded a bit like a do-over, but apparently, it’s a proper thing in golf, and it’s there to save time. Nobody wants to do that long, lonely walk back to the tee if your first ball is truly lost. That just kills the vibe for everyone.

My First Real Go With a Provisional

I remember this one round pretty clearly. We were on the 5th hole, a long par 4 with woods all down the right side. I stepped up, feeling pretty good, and just absolutely launched my drive. Or so I thought. It started out nice, then just kept fading… and fading… until it disappeared into those darn trees. Looked really bad. Like, gone-forever bad.

My friend, Mark, he’s usually the one who knows the rules, piped up, “You better hit a provisional there, mate.” I kinda grumbled. I hate hitting a second ball off the tee when I’m already annoyed with the first one. But, the thought of searching for five minutes, finding nothing, then trudging all the way back to hit my third shot from the tee? Nah, no thanks.

So, I said, pretty clearly so everyone heard, “Okay, I’m playing a provisional ball.” That’s a biggie, you gotta announce it. I grabbed another ball from my bag – thankfully I had one that wasn’t too scuffed up. Teed it up again. Took a deep breath. My only thought was, “Just get this one in play. Anywhere in play.”

I didn’t try to kill it this time. Just a smoother swing, focused on making good contact. And what do you know? It went straight down the middle. Not super long, but perfectly safe in the fairway. Funny how that happens, right? The shot you don’t overthink often turns out better.

Then came the search for ball number one. We all headed over to where we thought it went in. Stomping around in the leaves, peering under bushes. It’s always a bit tense. You’ve got that three-minute limit ticking in your head (used to be five, but they changed it). After about two minutes of searching, just as I was about to give up and declare it lost, Mark shouts, “Found it!”

It was there! Just inside the tree line, with a small window to punch it out back to the fairway. What a relief. So, I just picked up my perfectly fine provisional ball from the middle of the fairway (you don’t play it if you find your original within the time limit and it’s not out of bounds), and got on with playing my original, albeit from a tricky spot.

What I Learned and How I Do It Now

That day really hammered home the point of a provisional shot for me. It felt a bit awkward at first, but it made so much sense. It saved us a bunch of time and potentially a lot of frustration for me.

So now, my routine, if I hit one that looks like it might be lost outside a penalty area or out of bounds, is pretty straightforward:

  • Hit the questionable shot.
  • Let out a sigh (or something stronger, depending on the shot).
  • Clearly announce to my playing partners: “I’m going to play a provisional ball.”
  • Tee up another ball, try to make a decent, safe swing. Don’t need heroics here.
  • Then, go look for the first ball. If I find it in play within three minutes, great, I use that one and pick up the provisional.
  • If the first ball is truly lost or out of bounds, well, then I play the provisional (with the stroke-and-distance penalty already baked in).

It’s not a magic fix for bad shots, nothing is, haha. But knowing how and when to use a provisional ball just makes the game flow a bit better. It’s one of those practical things I’ve picked up just by playing, and sometimes messing up, and then figuring it out. Definitely a good habit to get into if you’re prone to the occasional wild one like me!
