First thing I did? Went straight to Barça’s official website scrolled through all their announcements. Nothing there but old transfer news. Then checked their socials – Facebook posts show them selling Dani Alves jerseys but zero Nico content.
Hopped over to Athletic Bilbao’s site just in case they announced a departure. Their homepage still showing Nico smiling in red-and-white stripes with that 2023 squad photo.
Time for detective work
Got on my transfer tracker app which usually gets updated fast. Filtered for Barça incoming transfers and bam – nothing under wingers for 2024. Saw a bunch of fan comments arguing though:
- “It’s done just not announced”
- “Spanish media lying again”
- “Bro check his contract clause”
Went straight to Nico’s Instagram and Twitter checked every post from last month. Saw him chilling with Bilbao teammates at training posts loving on Athletic fans. No Catalan flags no Camp Nou pics just Basque country vibes.
The “insider” rabbit hole
Then I fell into the Twitter rumor trap. Some account named @TransfersLeaks claimed “Medical completed!” with fake hospital photos. Reverse image searched it – same pics were from 2022 when he got his appendix out.
Checked proper journalists next. Guillem Balague’s feed said “Barça interested but FFP issues” while some Catalan reporter posted “Imminent signing!” 8 days ago but then went radio silent.
Connecting the dots
At this point my notes looked messy:

- Player posts: Happy at Bilbao
- “Sources”: Complete chaos
Remembered La Liga rules about buyout clauses. Searched La Liga’s registered contracts database – still shows €58 million release clause with Athletic. If Barça paid that it legally MUST appear within 48 hours in league records but nothing changed.
Finally just googled “Nico Williams signing confirmation” sorted by latest news. All articles said “close to signing” or “advanced talks” but zero had quotes from either club Nico or his agent.
My conclusion
Unless Barça themselves announce it or his contract gets dumped in La Liga’s registry it’s all smoke. What I told Marcos? “Chill man they haven’t signed him yet. Stop getting excited over Twitter garbage.” For now it’s just the same transfer window circus every damn summer.
