Man, let me tell you the struggle was real trying to draw anything car-like before this. Like, stick figures were my peak art skills, seriously. Wanted to tackle a Dodge, though, maybe a Charger? Looked mean. Figured I could break it down somehow.

Gathering My Sad Supplies
Dug out a random pencil – maybe a 2HB? Who knows, it was sharpish. Found an old spiral notebook half-filled with shopping lists. Back of an envelope woulda worked too. Grabbed an eraser crustier than month-old bread. Didn’t care, just started.
My First (Disaster) Attempt
Tried eyeballing a photo on my phone screen. Big mistake. Drew this box that kinda looked like a car coffin? Front was too long, back was too squat. Wheels were lopsided potatoes. Erased so hard the paper almost ripped. Felt like a five-year-old just scribbling.
Stumbled Upon The Magic: Simple Shapes
Found this tip somewhere: Forget the whole car. See chunks. Got myself a ruler – life changer, honestly. Started over:
- Drew one long flat rectangle for the undercarriage.
- Slapped another shorter rectangle leaning backwards on top for the cabin.
- Sketched a small rectangle pushed way to the front for the hood/grille area.
- Added two tiny squares where the wheels belong. Circles came later, I promise!
Suddenly had this wonky skeleton car thing. Messy? Oh yeah. But actually looked like something! Felt like I cracked a secret code.

Adding Some Dodge Swagger
Looked at my blobby truck-chassis and figured it needed attitude. That big Dodge front end? Crucial.
- Traced the front rectangle into a slight trapezoid – narrower at the bottom.
- Sketched a big ol’ plus sign faintly across that front face to mark the grille location.
- Added two headlight spots like little rounded squares on the top corners.
Bam! Dodge vibe instantly started popping. Wheels were still potatoes though.
Dealing With Those Damn Wheels
Circles are the devil when you’re new. Remembered that squares trick. Drew squares around the wheel spots first. Then drew circles gently inside the squares, touching all four sides. Erased the squares. Voila! Less potato-y wheels. Still needed a second pass to smooth ’em.
Connecting & Cleaning Up the Mess
Took the pencil again, lines a bit darker now. Smoothed out where the cabin meets the hood. Added a windshield sloped just right. Threw on a rear bumper – basically another small rectangle chunk. Erased all the crazy construction lines gently. Outlined the whole thing with slightly more confidence.
The lightbulb moment? Seeing my mess transform into something recognizable. It ain’t no masterpiece. Proportions might be wobbly. But holy cow, it’s a Dodge! Looks mean enough sitting there on my notebook page. Took me like three tries total. Key was starting dumb simple. If my shaky hands can do this… anyone can. Seriously. Shapes over skill. Less overthinking, more sketching.
