Hey everyone, I’m back again! Today, I had a little question pop into my head: “how long is Watkins Glen race track?” I’m not a huge racing guy, but I’ve heard of this track before and I know it’s pretty famous. So, I decided to do a little digging and share what I found with you all.
First things first, I fired up my trusty laptop and opened my web browser. Typed in “Watkins Glen race track length” into the search bar and hit enter. Boom! Tons of results popped up.
After sifting through a few pages, I found out that Watkins Glen actually has different layouts, or “configurations” as they call them. It’s like the track can be changed around depending on what kind of race is happening. Pretty neat, huh?
- For NASCAR races, which are probably the most well-known, the track is 2.45 miles long. That’s almost 4 kilometers for those who prefer metric system. This layout is what’s called the “short course,” and it has a special section called a “chicane” on the backstretch.
- Then there’s the “long course,” also known as the “Grand Prix” layout. This one is 3.45 miles long, or about 5.55 kilometers. This is the version they use for big international races like Formula 1. This track is longer and has 11 turns and run clockwise.
Also found that Watkins Glen is a big deal in the racing world. It used to host the Formula One United States Grand Prix for 20 years! That’s a really long time. Unfortunately, it sounds like they had some money troubles and it hasn’t been on the Formula 1 calendar since 1980.
But NASCAR has been racing there since 1986, and it’s still a popular track today. I read that they use the shorter 2.45-mile layout for those races.
So, there you have it! Watkins Glen is a pretty versatile track with a couple of different layouts, depending on the type of race.
