Okay, so today I wanted to figure out this whole “quarter length basketball” thing. I’ve heard people talk about it, but honestly, I never really paid attention to the specifics. So, I decided to dive in and get my hands dirty.

My Little Experiment
First, I grabbed my phone and opened the stopwatch app. I figured I needed to see things for myself, not just read about them.
Then I went to find some basketball games videos. I just want to look those games playing.
- I started watching, focusing on one quarter at a time.
- I hit the start button on my stopwatch right when the quarter officially began.
- Then I watched, like, REALLY watched. I noticed all the little things – timeouts, fouls, those annoying commercial breaks.
- I observed those were 12mins a quarter.
- As soon as the buzzer sounded for the end of the quarter, I slammed the stop button on my stopwatch.
I did this for a few different games, different leagues even, just to get a good feel for it.
And after all that intense watching and timing, I realized that most professional games quarters last 12mins, and sometimes a few minutes were added because of pauses, timeouts, etc.
That’s what I get, pretty simple, and I finally got it!
