So, I decided to check out Comanche Trail Golf Course out in Amarillo the other day. Heard some folks talk about it, figured I’d give it a shot myself.

Got in the car and drove over there. Finding the place wasn’t too hard. Pulled into the parking lot, seemed like a decent number of cars, but not overly packed, which was nice. Headed towards what looked like the main building, the pro shop I guess.
Walked inside. Pretty standard setup. Guy behind the counter got me checked in. Didn’t have a tee time, just walked up, but they got me sorted out pretty quickly. Paid my green fee and got myself a cart. The fella was helpful enough, pointed me towards the starter and the first tee. They’ve got two courses there, Tomahawk and Arrowhead, I ended up playing Tomahawk this time around.
Hopped in the cart, loaded up my bag. Didn’t really warm up much, just took a few practice swings near the tee box. The weather wasn’t too bad, typical Amarillo day, maybe a little breeze kicking up, which you gotta expect out here.
Hitting the Links
Got started on the first hole. The course looked pretty wide open, which suits my game, less chance of losing balls right off the bat. The fairways seemed alright, mostly green, maybe a few dry spots here and there, but nothing terrible.
- The layout was pretty straightforward, not too many blind shots or crazy doglegs on the front nine, at least.
- Played through the first few holes at a decent pace. Got stuck behind a slower group for a bit around the turn, but they waved me through eventually. Always appreciate that.
- The greens were okay. Rolled decently true, maybe a little faster than I’m used to, took me a couple of holes to adjust my putting.
Made my way around the course. It’s definitely got that Panhandle feel – flat, open, and yeah, that wind definitely picked up on the back nine. Made club selection a bit of a guessing game on a few holes. You really had to think about how the wind would affect the ball flight. Saw some prairie dogs popping up near a couple of fairways, which was kind of neat.

Finishing Up
Finished up the 18th hole. Felt pretty good about the round, wasn’t my best score ever, but enjoyed being out there. Drove the cart back towards the clubhouse. Dropped it off where they told me to.
Didn’t hang around too long afterwards. Just gathered my stuff, loaded the clubs back in the car, and headed off. Overall, it was a decent day of golf. Comanche Trail is a solid municipal course, nothing too fancy, but a good place to get out and play 18 holes if you’re in Amarillo. Gets the job done.
