Getting Started with That Thing
So, I finally decided to dive into that setup I’ve been calling the ‘ward colt’ project in my head. It’s been on my to-do list for ages, really. Just wanted something simple running in the corner, doing its thing without much fuss. Nothing fancy, you know?
First things first, I had to dig out some old gear. Found an unused small computer box in the back of the storage closet, covered in dust. Blew it off, checked if it even powered on. Surprisingly, it did. Felt like a good start. Then came the part of getting an operating system onto it. Decided to go with a lightweight Linux distro I had lying around on a USB stick.
The Actual Process
Getting the OS installed wasn’t too bad, just took a while. The real fun started when I tried configuring the network settings specifically for what I needed for this ‘ward colt’ idea. It just wouldn’t connect properly at first. Spent maybe two hours just poking around config files, restarting the network service over and over. Pretty frustrating, gotta say. I almost gave up and was ready to just wipe it and try a different OS.

- Tried pinging the router, failed initially.
- Looked through system logs, which were mostly gibberish to me.
Eventually, I found the issue. It was a dumb typo in one of the config files. One single character off. Felt a bit silly after spending so much time on it, but also relieved.
Where It’s At Now
After fixing that network hiccup, things went smoother. I installed the few small tools I needed for the core idea of ‘ward colt’. It’s basically running now. It does the simple task I intended it for. It’s not super fast, and I bet there are better ways to do it, but hey, it works for me.
It’s humming away quietly now. Kinda satisfying to see it up and running after wrestling with it. Learned a bit, mostly reminded myself to check for typos more carefully next time. That’s the main thing with these little projects, right? You tinker, you hit a wall, you figure it out (or stumble upon the solution), and you move on. This ‘ward colt’ thing is just another one of those little adventures.
