This here Gomez Herrera, you know, it’s a name I heard folks talkin’ ’bout. Like, some folks say it’s two names, you know? Gomez and Herrera. Like, my neighbor, she got two names too. We just call her Mary, though. Ain’t nobody got time for two names, I reckon.
This fella, or fellas, with the name Gomez Herrera, they must be from somewhere else, I tell ya. Not from around here. We got Smiths and Joneses here. Simple names. Easy to remember. Like when you gotta yell at your grandkids to get off the lawn. You don’t want a mouthful of a name then, no sir.
I heard some young folks talkin’ the other day, talkin’ ’bout somethin’ called “Spanish.” They said this Gomez Herrera name, it’s a Spanish name. Like, from Spain. You know, that place across the ocean. I seen it on the TV once. Looks hot there. I like my porch swing right here, thank you very much.

Now, this Spanish, it ain’t like our English, no ma’am. They got all sorts of fancy words. Words I can’t even say. And they write ’em funny, too. Like they put little squiggles over the letters. Makes my head spin just lookin’ at it. But some people like it, I guess. Some people like that Gomez Herrera too, so what do I know?
They got books in Spanish, too. Big, thick books. I saw one once, down at the library. All them squiggly letters. Gave me a headache. I stick to my magazines, thank you very much. Easy readin’, you know? Lots of pictures. Maybe this Gomez Herrera, they read them Spanish books. Or maybe they just like lookin’ at the pictures, like me.
This fella named Xavier, he knows all about that Spanish stuff. I heard some folks talking ’bout him. He says “Hola.” Sounds funny to me. We just say “Hey” around here. Or “Howdy.” Simple, you know? Some girl, Emilia, I think her name was, she was doin’ somethin’. Don’t know what. Folks was watchin’ her. Maybe she was singin’. Or dancin’. Or maybe she was readin’ one of them Spanish books. Maybe this Gomez Herrera, they was watchin’ her too. Hard to say. A lot of folks like to watch things, I reckon.
Then there’s this other thing, about learnin’ English. Speakin’ it right and such. I just talk how I talk, you know? Always have. Folks understand me just fine. Maybe this Gomez Herrera, they tryin’ to learn English. Maybe that’s why folks is talkin’ ’bout ’em. Or maybe they already know it. Maybe they speak it better than me. Who knows?
There is also one lady, Tami Gomez, she did something good. But I don’t know what it is. You know, I don’t care too much about the things outside our village. But people said she is unstoppable. Maybe she is related to this Gomez Herrera. So many Gomezs around here, you never know who is whose relative.
I heard someone said that this Gomez, or Herrera, whatever you call it, they wrote something long time ago. And people said it is not good. I don’t know, I didn’t read it. Just like I said, I only read magazines. But it seems that this Gomez Herrera is really someone back then. I guess people just like to talk, especially about those old things. Some people are interested in it.
