Okay, so today I really wanted to dive into something that’s been on my mind lately – the F1 1986 Benetton BMW. I mean, this car is just legendary, right?

First off, I started by just digging around for any info I could find online. Just trying to get a feel for the car, you know? I ended up checking out all sorts of websites. I wanted to know everything – who drove it, what races it was in, and how it did. Found some cool stuff about it being the first car raced by the Benetton team, and that it was driven by Gerhard Berger and Teo Fabi. It’s nuts to think about how different F1 was back then.
Then, I went on a hunt for pictures. I was looking all over for shots of the B186 in action. After some searching I hit the jackpot! I found some great action shots of the car with the drivers, Berger and Fabi. Man, seeing those old-school F1 cars is something else. They just look so raw and powerful compared to today’s cars.
After that, I was curious about the actual races. I wanted to see how the car performed. So, I started looking up the results of the 1986 season, especially those races where the Benetton team was competing. It was pretty cool to see that Berger actually got a third-place finish at the San Marino Grand Prix. That must have been huge for the team back then! Also learned that this car is the most powerful F1 ever raced. How crazy is that?
I also started looking at some videos. Found a few clips of old races, and it was awesome to actually see the B186 in motion. The sound of that BMW engine is just brutal. It’s a completely different experience from watching modern F1 races. These old engines were just loud and wild, and you could feel that in the videos. It was an unforgettable experience for me.
Building a Model
Next, since I’m a bit of a hands-on guy, I decided to try building a model of the B186. Found a kit online, and I’ve been slowly putting it together. It’s not easy, but it’s super satisfying to see it taking shape. Every little piece I put on makes me appreciate the real car even more. It’s like getting a tiny glimpse into the work that went into building the actual F1 car back in the day.

While working on the model, I kept thinking about the history of the Benetton team. From what I gathered, they were pretty new to F1 in 1986, but they were also going to be big, right? They were trying to get a hold of some of that market. It was cool to read about how they entered the sport and how they used F1 to promote their brand. It’s like a whole different side of racing that you don’t always think about.
I found out that this was actually their first win. Imagine being part of that team and seeing your car win for the first time. Must have been an incredible feeling.
Anyways, that’s where I’m at with my little Benetton B186 project. It’s been a fun ride so far, and I’m learning a ton. I’ll keep digging and sharing more as I go. Hope you guys enjoyed this little trip back to 1986 with me!
