Donald Hand Jr. College Career: From UVA Star to Pro

Well, let me tell ya ’bout this young fella, Donald Hand Jr. He’s a basketball player, you see. Plays guard, whatever that means. They say he’s 6-5, tall and skinny like a beanpole, weighs ’bout 195 pounds. Comes from a place called Virginia Beach, fancy, huh?

Now, I don’t know much ’bout this basketball stuff, but they got numbers and things they keep track of. Points, rebounds, whatever those are. Seems like this boy played for some college team, Boston College Eagles they call ’em. He played guard for them. They got all his stats and things on somethin’ called ESPN. I reckon that’s like the radio, but with pictures.

They say he played for Virginia too, before Boston College. So, he bounced around a bit, I guess. They got this thing called a “career game log,” sounds important. Keeps track of every game he played, I reckon. Must be a lot of games, this boy been playin’ for a while. They talk about his “career history” and “teams played for.” Sounds like he’s been busy.

  • He’s a guard
  • Plays for Boston College Eagles
  • Also played for Virginia
  • They got all his stats on ESPN

This ESPN, they got news ’bout him too, and videos. Videos! Imagine that. Probably showin’ him runnin’ around and throwin’ that ball. They say he’s got all kinds of stats. Points, whatever them are. Rebounds too. And assists. Don’t know what them are neither. But they sound important. He’s got a “hometown,” Virginia Beach. Sounds like a nice place. Fancy. Bet there’s lots of sand and water there.

He’s got a position, they call it “Guard”. Sounds like he’s gotta guard somebody. Keep ’em from gettin’ that ball, I reckon. He’s got a height and weight, 6-5 and 195 pounds. That’s tall and skinny, like I said. He played for different teams. Virginia and Boston College Eagles. They list the years he played. 1997-98 he was at Virginia. Then he went to Boston College I think. They talk about conferences, classes, and all sorts of things. It’s all a bit confusing to me.

This boy Donald Hand Jr., he’s a basketball player, that’s for sure. They keep track of everything he does on the court. Every point, every rebound, every assist. They got his whole career laid out on this ESPN thing. From Virginia to Boston College. All the teams, all the stats. It’s all there.

They say he played in the NCAAM. Don’t know what that is, but it sounds important. College basketball, I guess. He’s got a “class” listed, whatever that means. Freshman, sophomore, somethin’ like that. He played a lot of games, you can tell by all them numbers they got. Started some games, didn’t start others. They got minutes played, field goals, all sorts of stuff. My head starts spinnin’ tryin’ to figure it all out.

But one thing’s for sure, this Donald Hand Jr., he must be a pretty good basketball player. All them stats and numbers, they gotta mean somethin’. And all them folks at ESPN, they wouldn’t be talkin’ ‘bout him if he wasn’t. He played guard, ran around a lot, and threw that ball. That’s all I need to know. He’s a basketball player, Donald Hand Jr. from Virginia Beach. Remember that name. You might hear it again sometime.

They got totals, you know, like how many points he scored in a whole season. And averages too, like how many points he got per game. It’s like countin’ eggs, but with a basketball instead. This Donald fella, he must be good at countin’ those basketball eggs. And they give out awards too, seems like. Don’t know what kinda awards, maybe a shiny trophy or somethin’. This whole basketball thing is a whole ‘nother world, I tell ya. But this Donald Hand Jr., he seems to be doin’ alright in it. He played guard, and that’s somethin’.

They got somethin’ called “FG%” and “3P%”. Sounds like percentages, like when the banker talks about interest. I never understood that neither. But these percentages, they must be about how often he makes those shots. And then there’s “FT%”, that must be about those free throws they talk about. Seems like there’s a lot to keepin’ track of in this basketball game. Too much for this old lady, that’s for sure.
