DL650 XT: The Ultimate Guide for Beginner Riders

Okay, here we go! Let me tell you about my DL650 XT adventures.

DL650 XT: The Ultimate Guide for Beginner Riders

So, I finally pulled the trigger and got myself a DL650 XT. I’d been eyeing one for ages, wanting something a bit more comfortable for longer rides and occasional gravel roads. Ditching my old street bike was a tough call, but I was craving something more versatile.

First thing’s first: the farkles. You know how it is, right? Barely got the bike home and I was already ordering stuff online. Crash bars were a must – didn’t want to trash it the first time I dropped it off-road. I went with the SW-Motech ones; they seem pretty sturdy. Then came the handguards. The stock ones are…well, they’re there. But they ain’t gonna do much against a stray branch. Got some Barkbusters fitted up. Much better.

Next up was luggage. I wanted something that could handle a weekend trip, but wasn’t massive. Settled on some Givi Trekker Outback side cases. They’re aluminum, look pretty tough, and have plenty of space. Mounting them was a bit of a pain – instructions weren’t the clearest – but I managed to figure it out. Added a top box too, for my helmet and other bits and pieces.

The initial rides were…interesting. The DL650 XT feels totally different from anything I’ve ridden before. It’s taller, heavier, and the riding position is much more upright. Took me a bit to get used to the handling, especially at slow speeds. Felt a bit like I was wrestling a tractor at first, haha. But once I got the hang of it, I started to appreciate the comfort. Long highway stints are way easier now, no more aching back and wrists.

Then came the off-road experiment. I knew the DL650 XT wasn’t a hardcore dirt bike, but I wanted to see what it could handle. Found some gravel roads and forest trails nearby. Let some air out of the tires and cautiously started exploring. It was…challenging. The bike is definitely top-heavy, and the suspension is pretty soft. Had a few sketchy moments in loose gravel, but I managed to keep it upright. Learned quickly to stand up on the pegs and use my body weight to steer. It’s not a dirt bike, but it’s surprisingly capable if you take it easy.

  • Things I learned:
  • Tire pressure makes a HUGE difference off-road.
  • Standing up is your friend.
  • Don’t be afraid to use the rear brake.

Maintenance time. After a few thousand miles, it was time for the first service. Oil change, filter change, the usual stuff. I’m not a mechanic by any means, but I like to do basic maintenance myself. Saved a few bucks, and it’s good to get to know your bike. Everything was pretty straightforward, the DL650 XT seems well-designed and easy to work on. Watched a few YouTube videos beforehand, just to be sure I wasn’t going to screw anything up.

Overall, I’m really happy with the DL650 XT. It’s not perfect, but it’s a great all-rounder. Comfortable on the highway, capable on gravel roads, and relatively easy to maintain. It’s opened up a whole new world of riding for me. Now I’m planning a longer trip, maybe out to the mountains. Can’t wait!

And that’s my DL650 XT story so far. Hope you found it helpful or at least entertaining! Ride safe!
