Colonial Downs Racetrack: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Okay, so, I recently decided to check out the Colonial Downs Racetrack. I’d heard some buzz about it, you know, being the only one of its kind around here, and figured why not see what the fuss was all about.

First off, I got myself organized and started planning. The place is in New Kent, Virginia, which is a bit of a drive, somewhere between Richmond and Williamsburg. Not too bad, though. I found out it’s right off Interstate 64, so that made it pretty easy to get to.

I did a bit of digging online beforehand. Apparently, they do thoroughbred flat racing. Sounds fancy, right? I don’t know much about horse racing, but it seemed like a good time. The website mentioned that live racing is back after being shut down for a few years, so that’s probably why there’s been a lot of talk about it lately.

When I got there, I noticed a sign about a dress code. I mean, it’s not super strict or anything, but they do ask you to wear appropriate clothing – you know, shoes, shirts, pants, the usual stuff. They also mentioned no vulgar or offensive clothing. Makes sense, you don’t want to ruin everyone’s day with something inappropriate.

Getting inside was a breeze. The staff was friendly and helpful, which is always a plus. They have different areas for seating and betting. If you’re into that, there are also electronic gaming machines. I’m not a big gambler, but I did try my luck on a few races. It was fun, even though I didn’t win big or anything.

I spent most of my time just watching the races. It’s pretty exciting, seeing those horses run. They’re so powerful and majestic. There were families there too, and it looked like they were having a good time. I learned that every Saturday is Family Day, so that’s cool if you have kids.

One thing I did notice is that the place has had some tough times in the past. I read online that it was closed for a while, and I overheard some people talking about it. Hopefully, the new management can keep things going smoothly. It would be a shame to lose a place like this.

  • What I really enjoyed:
  • The atmosphere was lively and fun.
  • Watching the races was exciting, even for a newbie like me.
  • The staff was friendly and helpful.
  • It’s a good place for families, especially on Saturdays.

Overall, I had a pretty good time at Colonial Downs. It’s a unique experience, and if you’re in the area, I’d say it’s worth checking out. Just remember to dress appropriately, and maybe do a little research on horse racing beforehand if you want to get the most out of it.

Would I go again?

Yeah, I think so. It’s not something I’d do every weekend, but it’s a fun outing every now and then. Maybe next time I’ll bring some friends along and make a day of it.
