Can we believe every politicians promise we hear? Find out how to judge their sincerity and past record.

You know, whenever I hear politicians making those big, sweeping promises, I can’t help but get this little knot in my stomach. It’s not that I’m a total cynic, well, maybe a little bit now. But I’ve had my share of watching those promises go poof into thin air. It’s like a magic trick, only nobody’s laughing at the end.

Can we believe every politicians promise we hear? Find out how to judge their sincerity and past record.

I remember this one time, a few years back. There was this local election, and one candidate, super charismatic, came to our community hall. They were all about ‘investing in the future,’ you know the spiel. Specifically, they promised a major upgrade for our rundown local library. New computers, more books, evening classes for adults, the works. Sounded amazing, right? Our library was ancient, bless its heart, and desperately needed some love.

So, after they won – big surprise – I actually got a bit involved. I’ve always loved that library, spent half my childhood there. I volunteered to be part of a ‘community advisory group’ they were setting up to help plan the renovations. Felt pretty good, like I was doing my bit. We had a few meetings, all very official, with coffee and biscuits. We drew up lists of what we needed, talked to other folks in the neighborhood, put together what I thought was a solid plan. I even spent my own time researching affordable computer setups and adult learning programs.

And then? Well, then the updates started to get… vague. First, it was, ‘We’re securing the budget.’ Okay, fair enough, these things take time. Then it became, ‘We’re conducting further feasibility studies.’ Uh-huh. The meetings got postponed, then cancelled. My emails to the politician’s office started getting these very polite, very empty replies. After a while, even those stopped. Just silence.

The ‘community advisory group’ just sort of… dissolved. No announcement, nothing. We just stopped hearing from anyone. And the library? It’s still there, of course. Still ancient. Still with the same old, wheezing computers and the leaky roof in the kids’ section. Absolutely nothing changed. Not a single new book bought with that promised funding, not one new computer.

That whole experience, it wasn’t just disappointing. It was kind of… clarifying. It taught me a lot about the difference between a promise made on a stage and actual, real-world action. Now, I’m much more careful about where I put my energy and my hope. If something needs doing in my community, I’m more inclined to look to my neighbors, to grassroots efforts. It’s slower, maybe not as flashy, but at least you know who you’re dealing with. And you see real results, even if they’re small. That’s my practice now, anyway. Rely on the people around you, not the grand pronouncements from on high.
