So, I was messing around with this “black” thing, the Python code formatter. I heard about it from some online forum, thought I’d give it a whirl.
First, I installed it. That was pretty easy, just a simple:
pip install black
Ran that in my terminal. Boom, done. Or so I thought.
Trying it Out
Next, I opened up one of my messy Python scripts. You know, the kind with inconsistent spacing, random line breaks, a real eyesore. I’m not the neatest coder, I admit.
Then I typed this in my terminal:
black my_messy_*
And pressed enter.
I watched as the terminal did…something. It happened pretty fast. Then I opened the script again.
Wow. Just…wow.
Everything was…clean. Like, really clean. All the spaces were consistent. The lines were broken up in a way that actually made sense. It was like magic.
Tweaking Stuff
I played around with some options, too. Like, you can change the line length. I think the default is 88 characters, but I tried setting it to 79:
black --line-length 79 my_other_*
It worked! Shorter lines. Neat.
Final result
I even integrated it into my code editor (VS Code, if you’re curious). Now, every time I save a Python file, Black automatically formats it. It is such a time saver!
It’s like having a tiny robot that cleans up my code messes. I’m definitely a convert. My coding is still amateur, but at least it looks a little more professional now.
