Man, let me tell you about trying to figure out this John Metchie situation for my fantasy draft yesterday. Talk about a headache.

Starting Off Blind
Kicked things off opening way too many browser tabs. Looked at standard stats sheets first – catches, yards, the boring stuff. Felt overwhelming fast. Scratched my head thinking, “Okay, but what’s this guy really gonna do?” Needed more meat.
Hunting Down Opinions
Started digging for what other people smarter than me were saying. Found some “expert advice” articles. Here’s the confusing mess:
- The “If” Game: Nearly every piece started with “If John Metchie stays healthy…” Felt like reading the same line on repeat.
- C.J. Stroud Connection?: Exactly one person mentioned the rookie QB link. That seemed kinda important? Why was nobody else really talking hard about that?
The Potential Hype Train: Kept seeing phrases like “high upside” and “untapped potential.” Got it. But where’s the upside coming from?
Honestly? Felt like experts were just spraying hopeful words everywhere without a clear map.
My Big Mistake
So I got impatient. Saw “potential,” saw those college highlights from ages ago, and my dumb brain went, “Yeah, sleeper pick! Steal him later!” Almost slapped his name onto my draft board right then.
Slamming on the Brakes
Thankfully, brewed some strong coffee. Paused. Looked back at the stats that actually mattered for him:

- He Didn’t Play Last Year. At all. Big glowing “ZERO” under games played. Felt stupid for almost forgetting that massive red flag.
- Recovery Unknowns. Found some blurbs about different rehab stages, zero concrete info on his physical condition now.
- Tank Dell is Stealing Shine. Every highlight reel seemed to feature the OTHER rookie WR lighting it up. Bad sign for Metchie’s immediate targets.
Felt the hype bubble totally pop right there.
How I Ended Up Playing It (For Now)
So, full turnaround on my thinking:
- Watchlist Material. Didn’t draft him. Not worth the early or mid-round gamble with so many known quantities out there.
- Waiver Wire Watcher. If he somehow explodes early? Okay, I’ll fight for him off waivers. Zero cost then.
- Trust Nothing Before Week 3. Seriously. Need to see him actually on the field, getting passes, looking healthy. Otherwise? Just a name with old college clips attached.
Lesson learned? Don’t buy the “potential” label without screaming reality checks. Especially when the guy hasn’t played in a year. My draft board is safer for it, even if he does end up breaking out later.
