Oh boy, you talkin’ about that Phillies Star Wars night? That’s somethin’ else, I tell ya. Lots of folks talkin’ about it. Phillies, you know, that baseball team. They doin’ this thing, Star Wars. Sounds funny, right? Baseball and them Star Wars people with their fancy swords.

I heard it’s on a Wednesday, May somethin’. 23rd, maybe? They sayin’ “Use the Force.” What’s that even mean? Sounds like somethin’ my old man used to say when he was tryin’ to get the tractor started. They doin’ it for that cancer thing. Good for them, I guess. Cancer’s a mean cuss. Took my cousin Earl, God rest his soul. Phillies Star Wars Night, that’s what they callin’ it, and they want everyone to help out with that Stand Up to Cancer.
Then there’s another one, June 21st, I think I heard someone say. “May the 4th be with you,” they say. Sounds like a bunch of gibberish to me. But they givin’ away these little doll things, bobbleheads, they call ’em. Some kinda Phillie Phanatic dressed up like a Star Wars fella. Looks kinda silly, if you ask me. But hey, people like that stuff. X-Wing Fighter, that’s what it is. Sounds like one of them newfangled airplanes. They say you can get tickets some special way. Tickets for the Phillies Star Wars Night is what people want.
I heard they doin’ it again in August, too. August 22nd, someone said. They tellin’ folks to dress up like them Star Wars characters. Can you imagine? Old Mrs. Henderson from down the street, dressed up like that Princess Leia with the hair buns? Ha! That’d be a sight. People do that, you know. Dress up all crazy. They go to that Phillies game all dressed up. I don’t get it, but it makes them happy, I suppose. That Phillies Star Wars night is sure popular.
Another one in August. August 5th, playin’ the Kansas City somethin’s. Royals, maybe? I don’t follow baseball much. My husband, bless his heart, he used to love it. Me, I’d rather watch the birds in the yard. They also talkin’ about some guy named Gregg Murphy, a reporter, I guess. He was talkin’ about that Phillies Star Wars Night and showin’ off that Phillie Phanatic thing again. It’s always on the TV, that thing.
Now, some folks, they wonderin’ if they gonna be the only ones dressed up. Silly, ain’t it? Worryin’ about stuff like that. If you wanna dress up like a space alien, you go right ahead, I say. Don’t matter what other people think. That’s what I always told my kids. You do you. But it sounds like a lot of folks do dress up. It’s a big thing, this Phillies Star Wars Night.

The force. They keep sayin’ that. The force is with baseball. What in the tarnation? It’s just a game, ain’t it? But I guess it’s more than a game to some folks. It’s a whole… thing. This Phillies Star Wars Night. It’s somethin’, alright.
They do all kinds of other stuff at them games too. They got fireworks, I hear. Every Friday and Saturday, startin’ in May. Then in June, they got fireworks on Thursdays, too. Sounds loud. I don’t like loud noises much. Makes the cows jumpy. They call it AT&T Thursday Night Fireworks. What’s AT&T? Another one of them newfangled things, I bet. Phillies game is sure full of surprises.
Then they got somethin’ called Phillies School Spirit Day. Kids wearin’ their school shirts and makin’ signs and such. Tryin’ to be creative, they say. Showin’ their school spirit and their Phillies spirit. Sounds like a hoot. I remember when my kids were in school. They’d come home with all kinds of projects. One time, they made a volcano out of papier-mâché. What a mess that was! These school spirit and Phillies Star Wars Night sound more fun, but still, a mess.
- They got special prices for that school thing, too.
- That’s nice, I guess.
- Tickets can be expensive, you know.
- Everything’s expensive these days.
- Back in my day, you could get a loaf of bread for a nickel.
- Now, it’s more than my old dentures are worth!
And get this – they got these old baseball players, Phillies players. You can pay ’em to come to your party or somethin’. They call it “meet and greets” and “speaking engagements.” Sounds fancy. I wouldn’t know what to say to a baseball player. Probably ask him if he knows my grandson, Billy. He plays a little ball down at the schoolyard. That’s all I know about Phillies Star Wars Night and those events.
This Phillies Star Wars Night, it’s a big deal. It’s got baseball, and Star Wars, and fireworks, and school spirit, and old baseball players. It’s a whole lot of somethin’, that’s for sure. It ain’t my cup of tea, but folks sure seem to like it. I guess there’s somethin’ for everyone in this world. Even space aliens at a baseball game. Go figure.
