Okay, here’s my experience with Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver, written in a personal, blog-style format:

So, I finally made it to Hastings Racecourse! I’ve been meaning to go for ages, you know, just to check it out. Always heard about it, seen pictures, but never actually been. This weekend, I decided, “Screw it, let’s do this!”
Getting there was pretty easy. I just hopped on public transit. Could’ve driven, I guess, but parking looked like it might be a pain, and who needs that stress, right?
First impressions? It’s… bigger than I expected! Lots of people, lots of energy. It was a sunny day, thank goodness, because most of it is outdoors. I grabbed a program – gotta have a program, even if you don’t know what you’re doing – and just started wandering around.
Checking Out the Scene
I spent some time watching people. Seriously, the people-watching is top-notch. Everyone from serious gamblers, huddled over their forms, to families just out for a fun day. I even saw a couple of groups that looked like they were having bachelor/bachelorette parties. Wild!
Then, I figured I should probably try to understand what was going on. I found a spot near the railing and watched a couple of races. The horses are beautiful, I have to admit. So powerful and fast! It’s pretty exciting, even if you don’t have any money riding on it (which I didn’t… yet).

- Watched a few races – super exciting!
- The crowd roars when they enter the race!
- Grabbed some food – standard racetrack fare, but pretty good.
Trying My Luck (Sort Of)
Okay, I’m not a gambler. At all. But, “when in Rome,” right? I decided to place a small bet, just for the heck of it. I picked a horse based purely on its name – “Silly Goose” – because, why not? I went with a “show” bet, which I think means it just has to finish in the top three. Easiest bet for beginner.
Guess what? Silly Goose came in second! I won! I mean, I won like, $5, but still! It was a thrill. Beginner’s luck, probably, but I’ll take it.
After that, I mostly just soaked up the atmosphere. I walked around, checked out the different * a drink, enjoying sun and the vibes.
Overall, it was a really fun day. Even if you’re not into horse racing, it’s worth checking out Hastings Racecourse at least once. It’s a Vancouver institution, and it’s a great way to spend an afternoon. I’d definitely go back, maybe even try my luck again… as long as there’s a horse with a funny name running!
