Okay, so today I decided to mess around with the “Garrett Engle Swing.” I’d seen some videos online and it looked pretty cool, so I figured, why not give it a shot?
Getting Started
First things first, I needed to find a good place to practice. I cleared out some space in my backyard – moved the patio furniture, kicked the dog toys out of the way, you know the drill. I didn’t want to accidentally smash anything (or anyone!).
Then, I grabbed my trusty old club. It’s nothing fancy, just a standard one I’ve had for a while. I figured it would be good enough for experimenting.
The Actual Swing
I watched a couple more videos to try and get the basic motion down. It’s all about that weird, kind of loopy backswing, and then a really powerful downswing. Honestly, the first few attempts were… rough.
- Attempt 1: Complete whiff. Didn’t even touch the ball. Felt pretty silly.
- Attempt 2: Topped it. The ball just kind of dribbled a few feet. My form was definitely way off.
- Attempt 3: Chunked it. Took a huge divot out of the ground. My neighbors probably heard that one.
I kept at it, though. I started to get a little bit of a feel for the timing. It’s definitely different from a regular swing. You have to kind of “trust the loop,” which is easier said than done.
Making (Some) Progress
After maybe an hour of hacking away, I finally started to hit a few decent shots. They weren’t perfect, by any means, but they were going further and straighter than my usual shots. I even managed to get a couple to fly pretty high, which was cool.
I realized that my grip was probably a little too tight. I tried to relax my hands a bit, and that seemed to help. Also, I focused on keeping my eye on the ball (duh!), which is something I sometimes forget to do when I’m trying something new.
Final Thoughts (For Now)
So, after my little experiment with the Garrett Engle Swing, I’d say it’s… interesting. It’s definitely not something you’re going to master in an afternoon. It takes a lot of practice and a willingness to look a little goofy while you’re figuring it out.
I’m not sure if I’ll stick with it long-term, but it was fun to try something different. Maybe I’ll give it another go tomorrow and see if I can improve. If nothing else, it was a good workout!
