Today, I want to talk about a place I visited recently – Ocala, Florida, which is known as the “Horse Capital of the World”. I’ve always been fascinated by horses, so naturally, I was drawn to this unique city. My journey started with a bit of online research. I read that Ocala got this title officially in 2007, but its connection to horses goes way back to the 1940s. That’s when Carl G. Rose developed the first horse farm in Marion County.
First off, I booked a flight to Florida. When I arrived, the first thing I did was rent a car, because how else am I going to get around? Driving through Marion County, I saw lots of horse farms. It’s truly a sight to behold, all those beautiful horses grazing in the fields.
Then, I visited a few of these farms. I spoke to some of the owners and trainers. They told me stories about the history of the area and how it became such a hub for horse breeding and training. One old-timer even mentioned John Nerud, apparently a big name in the horse racing world, who passed away a few years back. He seemed like a legend around here.
