Don Mattingly Mustache: See How the Yankees Legends Look Changed Over the Years and If It Will Return

Alright, so, I’ve been thinking about growing a mustache, you know, not just any ‘stache, but the Don Mattingly kind. Yeah, that iconic one he used to sport back in his Yankee days. It’s a classic, right? But the Yankees, man, they’ve got this strict rule about facial hair. Only mustaches allowed, and even those have to be neat. No beards, no goatees, nothing that goes past the corners of your mouth. A bit too formal for my taste.

Don Mattingly Mustache: See How the Yankees Legends Look Changed Over the Years and If It Will Return

So, I started digging into this whole Don Mattingly mustache thing. I watched some old games, and man, that guy was a legend! MVP in ’85, almost got it again in ’86, and in ’87, he hit six grand slams! They even called him “Donnie Baseball.” But, I’m focusing on the mustache here. It’s thick, it’s well-groomed, and it just screams “baseball” to me.

Now, I’m not playing for the Yankees, obviously, so I don’t have to follow their rules. But I still wanted to try and get that Mattingly look. I started by letting my facial hair grow out, which was a new experience for me. I usually keep things pretty clean-shaven. Let me tell you, the first few days were itchy as hell!

Once I had some decent growth, I started shaping it. I trimmed the sides, kept the top lip area full, and made sure it didn’t go past the corners of my mouth. I used a small pair of scissors and a comb, just like I saw in some old-school barber videos. It was tricky, and I messed up a few times, but I kept at it.

The Final Look

  • The shape: It’s definitely got that classic handlebar vibe, but it’s not too exaggerated.
  • The thickness: It’s full, but not bushy. I think I nailed the density.
  • The length: It doesn’t go past the corners of my mouth, just like Donnie’s.

It took a while, but I finally got the Don Mattingly mustache I was aiming for. It’s not perfect, but I’m pretty happy with it. It’s a bit of a throwback, and it’s definitely a conversation starter. Plus, I learned that even some big-shot players like Cy Young winner David Price said they wouldn’t join the Yankees because of this rule! Can you believe that? They’d miss out on playing for a legendary team just because of some facial hair policy! I heard he was shortlisted for some fancy Hall of Fame thing a few times but didn’t make the cut. But hey, at least he got to rock that ‘stache on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon once, right? That’s gotta count for something! It is a bold move, but hey, I like to live on the edge a little. Maybe I won’t keep it forever, but for now, I’m rocking the Donnie Baseball look.
