01 Suzuki GS500: Common Issues and Easy Fixes Guide

Okay, so I got this old 01 Suzuki GS500. It was a steal, really, but it definitely needed some love. I figured, why not? I’ve always wanted to get my hands dirty with a motorcycle project.

First off, I went online and found some service manuals. There are a bunch of them, but the official Suzuki one is the best. It’s got everything you need, step-by-step instructions, diagrams, the whole nine yards. I printed that bad boy out and got to work.

The Teardown

I started by taking the whole thing apart. This bike had been sitting for a while, so I wanted to see what I was dealing with. I pulled off the fairings, the tank, the seat, you name it. This is where the manual really came in handy, showing me exactly what bolts to remove and in what order.

Cleaning and Fixing

Next, I cleaned every single part. There was a lot of gunk and grime built up over the years. I scrubbed and polished until everything was looking good. Then, the real work began. I found some problems that needed fixing. I followed the instructions and some problems were mentioned online to do a fix.

  • Fuel Issues: Apparently, these bikes can have issues with fuel delivery. Mine had a worn-out petcock diaphragm. I replaced that and cleaned out the fuel lines.
  • Electrical Gremlins: The wiring was a bit of a mess. Some of the connections were corroded, and a few wires were frayed. I cleaned up the connections and replaced the damaged wiring. The manual had some good diagrams that helped me figure out the electrical system.

Putting It Back Together

Once everything was clean and fixed, I started putting it all back together. It was like a giant puzzle, but with the manual, it wasn’t too bad. I torqued all the bolts to the right specs, connected everything back up, and hoped for the best.

The Moment of Truth

Finally, the moment of truth. I put some fresh gas in the tank, turned the key, and hit the starter. It took a few tries, but then she roared to life! It was such a great feeling to hear that engine run after all that work.

I’ve still got a few things to tune up, but this old GS500 is running great now. It’s been a fun project, and I’ve learned a ton about working on motorcycles. If you’re thinking about taking on a project like this, just make sure you’ve got a good service manual and a lot of patience.
