My Honda Rebel 250 Upgrade Journey
Alright, so I finally bit the bullet and grabbed a used Rebel 250. Solid little bike, but honestly? Felt kinda basic. I knew I wanted to spice it up a bit, make it more comfortable and way more fun on those back roads. Just needed to figure out what accessories were actually worth the cash without going overboard.
First thing that bugged me? The stock seat. Man, that thing was like sitting on a plank after half an hour. My butt was screaming! So, digging around online forums and asking buddies, a lot pointed towards this aftermarket seat cover with extra foam padding. Seemed like a cheap solution instead of buying a whole new expensive seat. Ordered one off a popular bike parts site – fingers crossed!
Installing it was easy enough:
- Popped the seat off the bike
- Unclipped the old cover – it was kinda flimsy
- Stretched the new, thicker padded cover over the seat foam
- Hooked the clips back on underneath
Boom, done in maybe 15 minutes? Instant difference. Rode for a solid hour later that day, and wow. Butt happiness achieved!
Next mission: Handlebars. Those stock bars felt low, like I was hunched over a bit much. Wanted something higher for a more upright, relaxed position. Saw mixed opinions on mini-apes or risers. Risers seemed simpler. Found some black 2-inch risers advertised as Rebel-compatible. Slapped them on:
- Loosened the top clamp bolts
- Popped the old bars off
- Set the new risers into place
- Dropped the bars back in, lined ’em up
- Tightened everything down good
Had to reroute the cables and wires carefully – didn’t wanna pinch anything! Took it for a spin. Definitely feels better! Less pressure on my wrists, feels more natural cruising. Minor win!
Now, luggage. Needed to actually carry stuff besides my backpack. Saddlebags seemed cool but pricey. Saw folks using these universal throw-over bags. Found a decent pair, waterproof lining claimed. Mounting was dead simple:
- Laid the bags over the rear fender behind the seat
- Fed the provided straps under the fender rails
- Tightened them down securely
- Connected the straps linking the two bags under the seat
Perfect for carrying lunch, my tool roll, maybe a light rain jacket. No fancy brackets needed! Just gotta be careful when swinging my leg over.
Last touch? Exhaust sound. Okay, I admit it, I wanted a little more rumble. Nothing crazy loud, but the stock muffler was whisper quiet. Did my homework – cheap mufflers can sound like crap or drone badly. Found one specifically recommended for the Rebel 250 that promised a deeper note without being obnoxious. Swapped it out:
- Unscrewed the clamp holding the old muffler on the header pipe
- Pulled the old one off (took a bit of wiggling!)
- Slipped the new muffler onto the header pipe
- Tightened the clamp really good with a socket wrench
Fired it up… oh yeah! That’s the sound! A nice, throatier purr without waking up the whole neighborhood. Put a big grin on my face!

- Risers: Comfy upgade, totally worth it.

Honestly, this combo transformed the bike for me. More comfy for longer rides, practical enough to carry stuff, and just flat-out more enjoyable to ride. Didn’t break the bank either. Rebel 250 felt like a whole new machine afterwards!
