First Steps: Digging Into Valheim Crossplay
Okay so last weekend I was like: “Yo my Steam crew can’t join my Xbox buddies? That sucks!” Grabbed my coffee and started Googling. Most forums kept saying it’s impossible cause Valheim ain’t built for crossplay. Almost gave up until I spotted one random Reddit thread mentioning some workaround.

Plugged in my laptop and fired up both Steam and Xbox versions. Did this:
- Launched Valheim on Steam first
- Hit “Start Server” and chose Community tab
- Made password “beardpower” cause vikings rock beards right?
Then on my Xbox Series X I logged into same Microsoft account as my PC. Searched for servers manually – nothing showed up! Got super annoyed. Restarted everything twice until…
The Fix That Actually Worked
Changed three things that finally connected everyone:
- Port forwarding: Opened ports 2456-2458 on my router (YouTube tutorial saved my life)
- Steam settings: Enabled “Community” under privacy options
- Case-sensitive password: “Beardpower” ≠ “beardpower” apparently
Woke up my sleeping roommate yelling when my buddy’s Xbox character suddenly appeared in our Steam world! Epic dragon fight happened 20 minutes later with all platforms fighting together.
What Still Sucks Though
Played 4 hours non-stop. Here’s the reality:

- Xbox players drop connection whenever host sneezes
- Text chat don’t work across platforms – we used Discord
- Xbox saves got corrupted twice forcing restarts
Overall? Worth the hassle. Steam and Xbox players actually building forts together feels like magic even with the lag. But damn I wish developers made this easier. Next project: trying to add mobile players using cloud streaming. That’ll probably explode everything.
